Wilkins Homers Dash Past Keys
June 24, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, MD - Andy Wilkins hit two home runs and Justin Collop threw six one-hit innings as the Dash beat the Keys 5-1 on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Winston stifled Frederick's batters for the second straight evening en route to the team's third straight win.
Winston-Salem (2-0, 34-38) scored in the first inning against Ryohei Tanaka to grab the lead. Tyler Saladino doubled to start the game and scored on Jose Martinez' RBI groundout to make it 1-0.
The Dash made it 3-0 in the fourth when Wilkins hit a monstrous two-run home run off Tanaka. The blast hit midway off the scoreboard above the right field wall, approximately 45 feet above ground. Mike Blanke immediately followed with a line drive home run to left to give Winston a four-run lead.
Wilkins connected for his second homer of the night in the sixth inning against Tanaka (5-1), an opposite field shot to left that just cleared the wall.
The Keys (0-2, 41-30) scored their only run in the ninth inning when Bobby Stevens hit a solo home run to left field off Leroy Hunt to keep Winston from posting its third shutout win of the season.
Collop (2-3) was terrific for the Dash for the second straight outing. He allowed just one hit and one walk over six scoreless innings to pick up his second win in as many starts. He left the game after retiring 11 consecutive batters and facing the minimum over six frames. Winston has limited the Keys to just two runs on eight hits combined over the first two games of the series.
Tanaka was the loser for the first time this season after giving up five runs on eight hits over six innings. He allowed three home runs after giving up just one in his previous 11 Carolina League games.
The multi-home run game for Wilkins was the first of his professional career. He has hit six of his 12 homers this season against the Keys.
The series concludes on Saturday night when RHP Ryan Buch (2-3, 4.93) opposes LHP Nick Haughian (3-4, 4.77). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the audio broadcast begins at 5:45 on www.wsdash.com .
The Dash will return to BB&T Ballpark for their first home stand of the season's second half on Sunday, June 26 when the Lynchburg Hillcats come to town. Fans may purchase tickets for every game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or by visiting www.wsdash.com .
