June 24, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
RHP Trevor Holder (3-8, 6.14) at RHP Justin Grimm (2-1, 2.22)
PACKED HOUSE: Last night's crowd of 5,486 that braved the rainstorm was the largest attendance at BB&T Coastal Field this season, surpassing the 5,343 that came to the Pelicans' 5-4 12-inning win on April 20.
UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY: Last night's loss puts the Birds under .500 in a half for the first time in 2011. They opened the first-half with an Opening day win and never looked back. It was only the second time this year that the Pelicans lost a home game after scoring first (4-28 vs. POT) and fell while outhitting their opponent (6-6 vs. WS).
WHAT A HALF!: The Pelicans finished the season's first half one half-game behind the Frederick Keys for the best overall record in the Carolina League this season at 40-29. The Birds have scored the most runs in the Carolina League (312) and allowed the fewest (246), giving them the best run differential in the circuit by far (+66). The offense also leads the league in on base percentage and is second in batting average. The pitching staff leads the loop in ERA with a 3.14 mark. They have racked up the most strikeouts and allowed the fewest home runs. The staff finished the half at second in the league in opponent batting average and walks per nine innings. The team defense has excelled as well, making only 60 errors in 69 games, tied with the Kinston Indians for the fewest errors in the league
FIRST-HALF LEADERS: Several Pelicans are led the Carolina League in a statistical category in the first half. Ryan Strausborger leads the loop with 84 hits and is tied for the most triples with seven. Joe Wieland leads all Carolina League hurlers in strikeouts (96), WHIP (0.96), walks per nine innings (0.32) and baserunners per nine innings (8.72). Robbie Ross is tied atop the league in wins with seven and Santiago Chirino is the hardest player in the circuit to strike out, whiffing only once every 12.06 plate appearances.
ANOTHER ACE OF BASE: Ryan Strausborger has a 15-game on base streak at home, tying him for the longest home stretch in the league this season with teammate Vinny DiFazio. The catcher reached in his first four plate appearances last night and has gotten aboard in every game he's played at BB&T Coastal Field this season.
