Winston-Salem Dash Game Notes
June 5, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Stealth Bombers: Kinston rode a wave of home runs and a terrific performance by starting pitcher Clayton Cook to an 8-1 victory over the Dash last night in front of a packed house at BB&T Ballpark. Abner Abreu, Jeremie Tice, Tyler Cannon, and Casey Frawley each hit home runs off Dash starter Ryan Buch give the K-Tribe a big lead that Winston could never eat into. The four home runs were the most allowed by the Dash this season and the combination of Cook and Chris Jones held Winston to a season-low-tying three base hits. Kinston's win forces a rubber game in the series finale this afternoon.
Role Play: Last night saw a role reversal between Winston and Kinston when it comes to home runs. The Indians, last in the Carolina League in homers, blasted four dingers against a Dash staff that had been in the upper half of the CL in fewest home runs allowed. Winston-Salem did not have any home runs last night, but still leads the CL with 50 homers, seven more than second place Lynchburg. The Dash led the Carolina League in dingers last year with 112 and the team is on pace to blast 127 in 2011.
Century Mark: Yesterday was regular season game number 100 at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash are 62-38 at their palatial home and they celebrated game 100 with a sellout crowd of 7,084. It was the biggest crowd of the 2011 season and the fourth-biggest crowd in BB&T Ballpark history. Last night's sellout was the eighth of the season.
Stay All Season: Despite last night's Dash loss the Kinston Indians are always welcome at BB&T Ballpark. The K-Tribe has lost 23 of its last 26 games in the city of Winston-Salem. In 2009, Kinston won the first game it played at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park, but lost its last nine. The Indians lost eight in a row at BB&T Ballpark before picking up their first win at the new yard on July 27 of last year. The 17-game losing streak in Winston-Salem spanned nearly 14 months; 11 of those Dash wins were by just one run. The K-Tribe has not won consecutive games in Winston-Salem since August 25-27 of 2008.
Happy Birthday Andre Rienzo!: Today Dash right-hander Andre Rienzo celebrates his 23rd birthday. Rienzo has adjusted well to his first season in the Carolina League, sporting a 2.91 ERA in 11 starts. He is third in the CL with 64 strikeouts but has been "King of the No-Decisions." Rienzo has not picked up a decision in nine of his 11 starts in 2011.
Easy to Reed: Addison Reed had another scoreless appearance Friday night, making it five in a row and ten straight innings since allowing his last run. With four more strikeouts against the K-Tribe, Reed upped his total with the Dash to 33 in 24.1 innings. The hard-throwing right-hander is among the CL leaders in many categories. Among relievers, Reed is fifth in opponent batting average (.196), third in K/9 IP (12.21), first in fewest BB/9 IP (1.11), and fourth in fewest baserunners/9 IP (8.51).
Oester on the Half-Shell: Jake Oester drove in the game-winning run in the fifth inning Friday night, giving him four RBI in his last three starts. He has tied or given Winston-Salem the lead twice during the home stand. The Cincinnati native has started more than half of the games on the current home stand and has five hits in 11 at-bats including two doubles and a triple. Heading into this week, Oester had five hits in his previous 45 at-bats. He would have a three-game hitting streak, but he made a pinch hit appearance in the series finale against Potomac on Thursday.
Playing them close to the vest: The Dash have an inordinate number of close games this season, as 43 of the team's 54 games have been decided by three runs or fewer and the team has had a lead in 42 games this season. Winston has played 21 one-run games and 14 two-run games. The Dash are 10-11 in one-run games and 7-7 in two run contests. At this rate, the Dash would play 89 one- or two-run games this season.
Today's Opposing Starter: LHP Giovanni Soto (4-3, 2.44) makes his 11th start of the season and his second against Winston-Salem. He lost to the Dash on April 17, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits in 3.2 innings. In six of his last seven starts, Soto has allowed one or fewer runs and is coming off his best start of the season. On Tuesday against Wilmington, he allowed just two hits over six shutout innings , striking out a season-high ten batters and walking two. Soto is in his first full season with the Indians organization after Cleveland acquired him last July 28 in a trade that sent 3B Jhonny Peralta to Detroit. The Carolina, Puerto Rico native spent all of 2010 in the Midwest League, splitting time with West Michigan, where he tossed two complete game shutouts, and Lake County. In his league debut, he struck out ten batters over five innings, allowing just one run on two hits and a walk. He also had a nine-strikeout game later in the season for the Captains. Overall, he went 9-8 in 22 starts with a 2.93 ERA and 107K/36BB in 113.2 innings. Slender, raw, young, and promising are all adjectives that have been used to describe Soto. The lefty stands 6'2" 180 lbs. and won't turn 20 until May 18. After getting drafted in the 21st round in 2009 out of high school, Soto was named the GCL Tigers "Tiger of the Year" after posting a 4-0 record and 1.18 ERA in 13 games, six starts. His pitch repertoire includes a fastball, sinker, curveball, cutter, and changeup.
