Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, VA- Lynchburg hitters had trouble scoring against Myrtle Beach starter Robbie Ross the first two times they faced him this season. They were able to score three runs on Sunday afternoon, but fell 5-3 to the Pelicans.
The Pelicans scored first in the top of the opening frame. Michael Olt lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Mitch Hilligoss from third to take a 1-0 lead.
Hilligoss scored again in the third. He singled with one out, and came around to score on a Ryan Strausborger triple. In the fourth, Santiago Chirino hit a two-run home run to left field to extend the lead to 4-0.
Lynchburg was unable to score against Ross in his two prior starts against the Hillcats. However, they were able to put one on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. With runners on second and third, Joe Leonard singled to score Phil Gosselin to make the score 4-1.
The Pelicans got the run back in the fifth, when Michael Olt hit a solo home run to left to put Myrtle Beach up 5-1.
Ross (7-1) went into a rhythm after that, retiring 10 Hillcats in a row from the fifth to the eighth inning. He struck out six batters on the afternoon.
Adam Milligan walked to lead off the ninth inning, and Joey Terdoslavich followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. Ross left the game, and Kennil Gomez came in from the bullpen. He got Leonard to ground out, and Terdoslavich moved to second on the play. Geraldo Rodriguez hit a single up the middle that scored both runners. Gomez settled down and struck out Braeden Schlehuber and L.V. Ware to hang on to a 5-3 Pelicans win, and earn his first save of the year.
Hillcats starter Matt Crim gave up five runs in five innings to take the loss, and move to 1-4 as a Hillcat this season.
With the loss, Lynchburg fell to 24-31. Myrtle Beach improved to 33-23.
The Salem Red Sox come into town Monday night to start a four-game series with the Hillcats. Righty Aaron Shafer (0-0) will make his first start for the Hillcats, and righty Junichi Tazawa (0-1) will pitch for Salem. First pitch is at 7:05 pm and the gates will open at 6.
