Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Behind three doubles and three RBI from Ian Gac, the Dash were able to overcome an early hole and win the series finale against the Indians, 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. The effort from Gac was his second three-hit game of the season, and secured a 5-2 home stand.
The Dash (26-30) jumped out to a first-inning lead when three straight hitters reached. Jared Mitchell walked before Jose Martinez singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Gac followed with a double into the left field corner that scored both runners and put the Dash up 2-0.
Similar to Saturday night's game, Kinston (28-27) responded in the second. The first three hitters had base hits, starting with Abner Abreu's double and Justin Toole's single. Chase Burnette then singled to right field to drive in Abreu, and Toole scored to tie the game after Martinez bobbled the ball in right field. After Dash starter Cameron Bayne retired Roberto Perez, Tyler Cannon hit his second home run in as many games to put the Indians up 4-2.
Winston moved one run closer in the third inning. Gac hit his second double of the game with one out, and attempted to swipe third on a pitch in the dirt to Andy Wilkins. Perez's throw to catch Gac at third was errant, and he scored on the error.
Bayne worked out of a jam in the fifth when Kinston had runners at second and third with one out. Abreu grounded into a fielder's choice that retired Frawley heading home, and in the same play Abreu was tagged out trying to take second base, completing an unorthodox double play to end the inning.
Winston-Salem came back in the bottom of the frame and scored three runs on fourth straight hits with nobody out against Indians starter Giovanni Soto. Mitchell doubled, and advanced to third on Martinez's bunt single. Gac drove home Mitchell with his third double of the game, and Wilkins followed with a two-run single to put the Dash up 6-4.
From there, Bayne (5-3) cruised to retire nine of the final 11 batters he faced before giving way to Taylor Thompson. In seven innings, Bayne gave up four earned runs and struck out three to get the win. Thompson threw the last two innings and gave up one hit, earning his fifth save of the season. Soto (4-4) was hit with the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits.
The Dash took the series from Kinston, keeping a streak of 11 straight winless series for the K-Tribe at BB&T Ballpark.
Winston-Salem heads on the road for a mid-week series with Myrtle Beach starting on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Joe Serafin (0-5, 5.52) starts for the Dash in the series opener. The team returns to the Twin City on Friday to start the last home stand of the first half. Winston takes on Northern Division foes Wilmington and Frederick for three games each.
