Salem Red Sox News Release

Frederick, MD - The Keys scored two in the first and two in the second, more than enough offense for Oliver Drake and a pair of Frederick relievers to down the Salem Sox 4-1 on Saturday night at Harry Grove Stadium. For the second straight night, Salem mustered seven singles and zero extra-base hits against the Keys, and the Red Sox only put multiple runners on base once in the entire game. With the setback, the Red Sox fell to 26-28, the first time all season that Salem has dropped to more than one game below the .500 mark.

Oliver Drake tossed seven and a third innings, allowing only seven singles and one run. Dan Butler delivered a two-out RBI single in the fourth, but otherwise no Salem knock scratched the Keys veteran starter. Chris Petrini relieved Drake with one out and two on the eighth and struck out Peter Hissey. After that punch-out, Sean Gleason supplanted Petrini and struck out three more batters in the final inning and a third to earn his league-leading 14th save.

Frederick's offense punctured Salem starter Chris Hernandez early, with Bobby Stevens blasting a one-out solo homer in the first to give the Keys a 1-0 lead. Tyler Townsend doubled immediately after the homer, scoring two batters later when Adam Donaghie singled to center, making it 2-0.

In the last of the second, Hernandez hit Steve Bumbry to begin the frame, then threw an errant pickoff toss that moved Bumbry to second. Trent Mummey singled home Bumbry for the Keys' third run, and Mummey stole second and third base on consecutive pitches to move into position for Townsend's sac fly. Hernandez recovered to retire 10 of the final 12 batters he faced, but the Salem offense could not rally to bring the Sox back into the ballgame.

Hernandez tossed five frames, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, with two walks and three strikeouts. He threw 46 of his 76 pitches for strikes. In relief, Jeremiah Bayer threw three shutout innings for Salem, striking out a pair in the process.

The only three-hit performance in the game came from Salem's leadoff hitter Wilfred Pichardo, who went 3-4 and scored Salem's run. Dan Butler added two hits, but the rest of the offense managed just two more hits and struck out ten times.

Salem will try to salvage the series finale in Lynchburg on Sunday at 2 PM. Drake Britton gets the ball for the Sox opposite Keys' southpaw Nick Haughian.
