Winston-Salem Dash Game Notes

April 30, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Less Than Jake: Wilmington starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi was dominant over seven innings, pitching the Blue Rocks to a 4-0 win over the Dash in the series opener last night at Frawley Stadium. The highly-regarded right-handed pitching prospect tied a career-high with ten strikeouts, a feat he also accomplished last Saturday against the Dash at BB&T Ballpark. Between the second and sixth innings, he retired 15 straight batters and took a one-hitter into the seventh. The Blue Rocks were powered by home runs from John Whittleman and Jose Bonilla off Winston-Salem starter Joe Serafin. The Dash look to even the series at one win apiece tonight.

No Soup for You!: Last night marked the first time that the Dash failed to score a run in a game this season. Wilmington is now the only team in the Carolina League that has not been shut out this year.

Café Latte: Jose Martinez raised his batting average to an even .400 with his 2 for 4 night at the plate on Friday. The slender outfielder, who goes by his late father's nickname "Café," is second in the Carolina League in batting behind Wilmington's Rey Navarro (.425). The two hits yesterday extended his season-best hit streak to seven games. Martinez's name is littered all over the Carolina League leaderboards. He is first in hits (34), third in on-base percentage (.446), tied for fourth in doubles (8), second in runs scored (20), tied for third in total bases (47), and third in most plate appearances per strikeout (11.63).

Luck of the Irish?: Dash starter Terry Doyle takes the mound in search of his first win of the season. Doyle, the team's opening day starter, has been unable to celebrate a win in a game he has pitched in yet; Winston-Salem is 0-4 when he starts a game in 2011.

Gacamole: Ian Gac successfully ran his streak to 11 games with his 1 for 4 effort last night. Gac is batting .375 (15 for 40) during the streak with five doubles, two home runs, seven RBI, and eight runs scored. He is tied for the CL lead with seven home runs this season. Five of Gac's home runs this season have either tied the game or given Winston-Salem the lead. The Seattle-native is fourth in the CL in RBI (19), third in slugging percentage (.654), and second in total bases (51).

Roller Oester: Since getting called up from low-A Kannapolis last Thursday, Jake Oester is 7 for 14 with an RBI and one run scored. Going back to his final two games with the Intimidators, Oester has a six-game hit streak and is batting .450 (9 for 20). Prior to this hit streak, he had been 0 for 13 on the season.

The Wilky Way: After a slow start to the season, Andy Wilkins has settled into his groove offensively. The former Arkansas Razorback hit just .154 with no extra-base hits or RBI in his first seven games. In his last 14 games, Wilkins is batting .291 (16 for 55) with four homers, ten RBI, and five doubles.

E-Yikes: The Dash committed two errors last night, continuing a difficult stretch defensively for the team. The team committed eight errors in its first ten games of the season, but has committed 17 in its last 11. Winston had no more than two errors in its first ten games, but has had four three-plus error games since. The Dash are tied with Lynchburg with the most errors in the Carolina League (25).

Close-Call Contests Continue: Thursday featured yet another close game for the Dash in a season that has almost exclusively featured nip and tuck contests. Seventeen of the team's 21 games have been decided by three runs or fewer and the team has had a lead in 16 games this season. Winston has played 11 one-run games; only two teams have played for one-run games than the Dash (the AA Mississippi Braves and Advanced-A Palm Beach Cardinals have played 12). The Dash are 4-7 in such contests. At this rate, the Dash would play 73 one-run games over the course of the season. Thursday's game was also the fourth in Winston's last nine games that the team has rallied to score late runs only to end up losing by one or two runs.

Today's Opposing Starter: LHP Noel Arguelles (0-0, 1.46) makes his fourth start of the season and his second straight against Winston-Salem. Last Saturday against the Dash he allowed two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings. Arguelles defected from Cuba along with Red Sox shortstop prospect Jose Iglesias in July of 2008 at the World Junior Championships in Edmonton, Canada. He spent the next 18 months trying out for several different major league clubs before the Royals inking him to a five-year, $6.9 million contract. Kansas City rested him for a couple months, but the organization decided to shut him down for the entire 2010 season after realizing he had suffered a shoulder injury due to his numerous workouts. He had surgery on his left shoulder in August of 2010. When healthy, his fastball tops out at 94 mph and sits in the low-90s. He also throws a slider, a curveball, and a changeup. Prior to defecting, the 21-year-old Arguelles pitched in Cuba's Serie Nacional for La Habana Vaqueros (Havana Cowboys) from 2006-08 and for the Cuban team at the 2007 Pan-American Junior Championships, where he won the gold medal game with eight shutout innings against Mexico.
