Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - Terry Doyle pitched seven good innings, but the Dash offense could not cash in on runners in scoring position and Winston-Salem dropped a 3-1 decision to the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium. The Dash left six men in scoring position over the course of the evening and have managed to score only one run in the first two games of the series.
After being shut out the previous night, Winston-Salem (8-14) struck for an unearned run in the second inning off Wilmington starter Noel Arguelles. Ian Gac reached base on a throwing error by third baseman Deivy Batista and moved to second on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Nick Ciolli brought him home on a triple to left-center to give the Dash a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Rocks (14-7) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third against Doyle. With one out, Batista singled on a bunt and moved to third when Whit Merrifield hit a ground-rule double to left. After Doyle (0-3) got Alex McClure to pop out, Rey Navarro tripled to right, scoring a pair and sending Wilmington to the 2-1 advantage.
The margin stayed at one run until the seventh, when the Rocks added an insurance run against Addison Reed. The righty walked Merrifield and threw a wild pitch to advance the runner to second. Merrifield was sacrificed to third base and scored on Reed's second wild pitch of the inning.
The taut contest could have swung in Winston-Salem's favor a number of times, but the Dash were just 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position on the night. They left a runner at second base in each of the last three innings. Their last chance came in the ninth, when Jason Bour, representing the tying run, struck out looking against Michael Mariot to end the ballgame.
Despite allowing just two runs on six hits in seven innings, Doyle took the loss. The Dash are now 0-5 when their opening day starter takes the mound this season. Cuban defector Arguelles (1-0) picked up his first professional stateside win, allowing just an unearned run on five hits in 5.1 innings. Mariot got credit for the save, his first of the season.
The Dash will try to salvage the series on Sunday afternoon. RHP Andre Rienzo (0-0, 2.75) opposes RHP Elisaul Pimentel (2-0, 7.53) in a 1:35 start. The audio broadcast of the game begins at 1:15 on www.wsdash.com.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday night to start a six-game home stand against the Lynchburg Hillcats and Potomac Nationals.
