Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg, VA- Both the Lynchburg Hillcats and Kinston Indians received strong outings from their starting pitchers, but in the end, Dimasther Delgado scattered two hits and didn't allow a run, leading the Hillcats to a 4-0 win over the Kinston Indians Saturday night.

Delgado and Kinston starter Toru Murata exchanged scoreless frames for the first four innings. Delgado only allowed one hit in those innings, but did walk three batters. He was given help in the top of the second when Todd Cunningham sprinted backwards on a long drive by Indian catcher Roberto Perez to center field. He sprawled out going towards the wall, made the catch, and then was able to double Chase Burnette off of first base to end the inning.

Murata, making his first professional start, was equally as impressive, striking out seven batters through four innings, and not allowing a base runner for the first three.

The fifth inning was the difference in the game. Delgado came out, and while he gave up a walk, he got out of the inning unscathed. When the Hillcats came up to the plate in the bottom of the fifth, they were facing a new pitcher in Adam Miller.

Miller was making his first appearance since May of 2008 after four surgeries to the middle finger on his throwing hand. The rust showed as the inning progressed. He struck out the first batter he faced, Adam Milligan. Joey Terdoslavich then roped a double to right field. Joe Leonard followed with a long blast out to left-center that cleared the fence and gave the Hillcats a 2-0 lead. It was his second home run of the season.

After Leonard homered, Andrelton Simmons singled. Braeden Schlehuber grounded out to the shortstop, but Simmons was able to advance to second on the play, as he was running on the pitch. Keenan Wiley followed with a walk. LV Ware singled to center, and as Indians center field Delvi Cid tried to pick up the ball to attempt a throw home, he overran the ball. Both Simmons and Wiley scored and Ware ended up on second to increase the lead to 4-0. Miller (0-1) got Todd Cunningham to fly out to left, but the Hillcats got the cushion they needed.

Delgado (1-3) got into a little bit of trouble in the sixth. After retiring the first two batters, he gave up a single to Bo Greenwell and a walk to Adam Abraham. Andrew Wilson came into the game, and retired the first batter he faced to allow the Hillcats to escape unscathed. Delgado pitched a season high five and two-thirds innings, giving up just two hits, and striking out four.

The Indians put a scare into the Hillcats in the later innings, including loading the bases with just one out in the eighth inning. Jason Lowey came into the game, coerced a harmless pop-up to first from Casey Frawley and got Chase Burnette to fly out to escape the inning. He then worked a scoreless ninth to earn his third save of the season.

The Hillcats picked up their third home win of the season in front of a crowd of 4,459 and improved to 7-13 on the season. Kinston fell to 8-14.

The rubber match, and final game of the homestand, will take place Sunday afternoon. The Hillcats will send righty Zeke Spruill (1-1) to the mound, while lefty Drew Pomeranz (0-0) will pitch for Kinston. It will be Lynchburg Little League Day at Calvin Falwell Field, which will feature a Team Photo Giveaway to the first thousand fans through the gate. Gates will open at 1 p.m. and first pitch will be at 2:05.

If you can't make it to the game in person, the Hillcats On-Deck Show presented by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 1:40 p.m. Tune in to 105.5 KD Country or go to lynchburg-hillcats.com to listen live to all the action.
