Townsend, Bernardo, Hoes Each Drove Home Three In the Losing Effort

Frederick trailed Myrtle Beach by eight runs after three innings on Saturday night. The Keys put together an impressive comeback attempt before falling 11-10 to the Pelicans. Pinch runner Bobby Stevens was on third base as the game's tying run in the top of the ninth but C Luis Bernardo struck against RHP Johan Yan to end the game. The loss snapped the Keys three-game winning streak and sent their 2011 mark back under .500 at 10-11.

For a fifth time on the road trip, the Keys scored in the first inning. CF Kyle Hudson led off with a walk. Two batters later, 1B Tyler Townsend doubled Hudson home. Myrtle Beach quickly responded with a run in the bottom of the first. Frederick scored another run in the second inning but Pelicans went to work in the second and third inning as they stretched their lead to eight.

Myrtle Beach batted around in the second as they scored five runs, four earned, on four hits to make the score 6-2 after two. RHP Jacob Rasner started the third inning but did not register an out as he finished up his outing allowing ten runs, six earned, on eight hits over two innings of work. RHP Justin Moore relieved Rasner and pitch effectively in his three innings of work. However, the Pelicans led 10-2 after three innings on Saturday night.

The Keys comeback began in the sixth inning. After a walk by LF Trent Mummey led off the inning, 2B LJ Hoes crushed a two-run blast to left field off RHP Ryan Kelly. The Hoes' homer cut the Frederick deficit to six. Later in the inning, C Luis Bernardo came to the plate with Tyler Townsend on third and DH Tyler Kolodny at second. Bernardo chopped a ball to the left side of the infield. Pelicans' SS Leury Garcia made a backhand play in the hole but his throw pulled 1B Mitch Hilligoss off first. Townsend and Kolodny both scored on the Bernardo infield single. Frederick trailed by four after six.

In the seventh inning, the Keys scored two runs in the top of the inning but Myrtle Beach scored a critical insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 11-8 after the seventh.

Facing the side-winding RHP Johan Yan in the eighth inning, the Keys played two more runs to make it a one-run game entering the final frame of the night.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Tyler Kolodny singled into left field. Bobby Stevens entered the game as a pinch runner for Kolodny. Stevens stole second base with RF Jacob Julius at the plate. After Julius lined out to left, Luis Bernardo stepped to the plate. Yan won the battle as Bernardo went down on strikes to end the game.

Ryan Kelly picked up the win for the Pelicans while Jacob Rasner fell to 1-2 on the season.

Frederick and Myrtle Beach will play the rubbermatch of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon. LHP Nathan Moreau (2-1, 4.11) will start for the Keys while the Pelicans will turn to LHP Robbie Erlin (1-0, 2.86). First pitch from BB&T Coastal Field is set for 3:05 p.m.
