Pressly Tosses Six Shutout Frames in 7-0 Win
April 30, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
(SALEM, VA) Potomac couldn't get anything going against Salem's strong pitching and suffered a 7-0 loss at Lewis-Gale Field Saturday night.
Red Sox starter Ryan Pressly was sensational, carrying a no-hitter into the 5th. Nationals third baseman Stephen King broke it up with a line drive to center, but when the 22-year-old left the game that was the only hit he gave up. Pressly turned things over to the bullpen after only 61 pitches, striking out five and walking no one.
Salem (16-5) only needed one pitcher from the bullpen to finish off the game, as Will Latimer was equally good. The lefty tossed three innings, whiffing two and walking none. The only hit he gave up was in the 9th inning when Jeff Kobernus torched a pitch to the right-center field gap for a double. Kobernus continues to lead the P-Nats in hits with 23.
Potomac (8-13) got solid starting pitching as well. Paul Demny didn't give up a run and came away with a big out every time he needed one. The most stressful jam Demny worked out of came in the bottom of the fourth. Runners reached first and second with nobody out. But the righty responded by getting Dan Butler and David Mailman to pop out to left field, and ended the threat by inducing a groundball out from Michael Almanzar.
All of Salem's runs scored in the 6th and 7th innings and all of them came off of home runs. David Mailman homered twice, once in the six and once in the 7th. He finished the game with three RBI. Jeremy Hazelbaker and Dan Butler each had a two-run shot. They are tied for team lead with five home runs this year. Salem is the best power hitting team in the Carolina League with 25 round-trippers.
Potomac looks to grab the last game of the three-game set, with first pitch schedule for 4:05 tomorrow. The P-Nats send Evan Bronson to the hill (0-0, 0.00 in 3 IP). The Red Sox toss Chris Hernandez (2-0, 0.64).
