Arguelles Notches First Win in 3-1 Final

Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - The big names in the Wilmington Blue Rocks' rotation continue to sizzle. One night after Jake Odorizzi secured his first Advanced-A win, well-chronicled Cuban defector Noel Arguelles (1-0) logged his first win period as the Blue Crew (14-7) bested the Winston-Salem Dash (8-14) at Frawley Stadium on Saturday night, 3-1.

The Blue Rocks needed a mild rally to guarantee a series victory as a defensive miscue made for a Winston-Salem run in the second inning. Ian Gac reached on a throwing error by third baseman Deivy Batista to start the frame. A wild pitch gave Gac second and two outs later, a poor read by center fielder Tim Ferguson saw a Nick Cioli batted ball fly over Ferguson's head in the left-center gap for an RBI triple.

That would be the only run against Wilmington pitching on the night though, as Arguelles struck out Jason Bour to strand Cioli at third. No Dash player would get past second again.

Batista made up in part for his miscue with a lucky popped bunt single in the third when third baseman Jake Oester's dive came up just short. Whit Merrifield then lined a ground-rule double into the visiting bullpen in left and with two outs, Rey Navarro threaded a triple down the right-field line for two RBIs and a 2-1 Wilmington lead.

Dash starter Terry Doyle (0-3) settled from that point on. He allowed just those two runs on six hits and a walk while whiffing three over seven innings of work.

During that time, Arguelles worked around a leadoff single by picking off Daniel Wagner in the third. The southpaw nullified a pair of singles in the fourth by striking out the side. Arguelles lasted a career-best 5.1 innings. He scattered five hits, walked none and struck out five while allowing just one unearned run and lowering his ERA to 1.02 through four starts.

His piggybacking reliever Michael Mariot put the leadoff man on in the seventh and eighth with a walk and double respectively. Both times he retired the next three in a row.

Merrifield walked against reliever Addison Reed to start the eighth, took second on a wild pitch, third on an Alex McClure sacrifice, and scored a second wild pitch for a big insurance run. Mariot made it stand up when he struck out two in the ninth for his first save.

The three-game set comes to a close on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. Right-hander Elisaul Pimentel (2-0, 7.53) gets the ball for the Blue Rocks against fellow righty Andre Rienzo (0-0, 2.75). Broadcast coverage begins at 1:05 p.m. as studio host Adam Dobrowolski brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.

Sunday marks the birthday of the Blue Rocks' lovable mascot, Rocky Bluewinkle. Expect cameos by many of his favorite furry friend mascots from throughout the Delaware Valley. The Sunday ticket special allows fans to receive four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas and two webkinz for only $60, or four tickets and two webkinz for $50.
