Thursday, April 28, 2011, 7 p.m. | BB&T Ballpark | Winston-Salem, NC
Webcast available on www.wsdash.com 15 minutes before first pitch
Game No. 20 | Home Game No. 11 | 2011 Home Record 4-6 | 2011 Road Record 4-5
RHP Cameron Bayne (2-1, 3.32) vs. LHP Nick Haughian (0-1, 9.39)
Swiper, More Swiping: The Keys stole five bases, including a straight steal of home, en route to a 4-2 win over the Dash yesterday afternoon. After plating single runs in each of the first two innings, Frederick pocketed a pair in the sixth thanks to some nifty baserunning. With the bases loaded against Hector Santiago, Trent Mummey caught the Dash napping and stole home after Santiago stepped off the rubber. Later in the inning, Tyler Kolodny, who had stolen third base on the Mummey steal, scored after Santiago's 0-2 offering to Bobby Stevens went to the backstop for a wild pitch. Winston-Salem got solo home runs from Jose Martinez and Andy Wilkins, but could not get any closer than two runs the rest of the way. The Dash have lost eight of their last ten games heading into the final game of this eight-game home stand.
Close-Call Contests Continue: Wednesday featured yet another close game for the Dash in a season that has almost exclusively featured nip and tuck contests. Sixteen of the team's 19 games have been decided by three runs or fewer and the team has had a lead in 15 games this season. Winston has played ten one-run games, tied for the most in the Carolina League and tied for the second-most in all of minor league baseball (only the AA Mississippi Braves have played more with 11). Winston-Salem is 4-6 in such contests. At this rate, the Dash would play 74 one-run games over the course of the season.
Bag it and Wag it: Dash IF Daniel Wagner's 12-game hit streak met its demise yesterday with an 0 for 4 day at the plate for the Kannapolis native. It was just the second game of the season that Wagner did not collect a base hit. He hit .271 (13 for 48) during this steak, which is tied for the longest in the Carolina League this season.
Gac of Diamonds: While Wagner could not extend his hit streak, Ian Gac successfully ran his streak to nine games with his second-inning single off of Keys starter Ryan O'Shea. Gac is batting .375 (12 forc 32) during the streak with three doubles, two home runs, six RBI, and six runs scored. He is tied for the CL lead with seven home runs this season. Five of Gac's home runs this season have either tied the game or given Winston-Salem the lead. The Seattle-native is fourth in the CL in RBI (18), third in slugging percentage (.657), and second in total bases (46).
Homecoming Kings: Dale Mollenhauer continued to produce at the plate in his return to Winston-Salem. He went 1 for 3 yesterday with a single, a walk, and a stolen base and has now reached base eight times in 13 plate appearances in the series. Mollenhauer and RHP Jake Rasner were both plucked from the White Sox by the Orioles in the minor league portion of the Rule V Draft this past offseason. Rasner pitched for Winston in parts of 2008, 2009, and 2010, going 10-16 in 72 games (39 starts) with a 4.28 ERA. Mollenhauer played in 161 for Winston-Salem in 2008 and 2009, hitting .260 with six home runs, 30 doubles, seven triples, 56 RBI, 89 runs, and 24 stolen bases. He spent all of last season with AA Birmingham and hit .262-1-27.
First thing's First: Winston's opponents haven't waited to begin building leads on this home stand. Frederick scored a run in the first inning last night to make it five straight ballgames that the Dash's opponent has scored to start the ballgame. Wilmington and Frederick have combined to score ten first-inning runs in the last five games. Prior to this stretch, Winston had allowed just two first-inning runs through the first 13 games.
Attention J-Mart Shoppers: Jose Martinez went 2 for 4 yesterday with a double and a run scored. Martinez's name is littered all over the Carolina League leaderboards. He is second in the CL in batting average (.397), first in hits (29), second in doubles (8), first in runs scored (19), tied for fourth in total bases (39), and second in most plate appearances per strikeout (11.57).
Yount Up: Austin Yount stayed hot Monday night by hitting a two-run home run for the second straight ballgame. His blast started the Dash rally that saw seven runs score to get Winston to within a run of the Keys. Winston-Salem's two biggest innings of the season have been started by a Yount home run. Yount hit a solo shot in the eighth inning on opening night to spark a four-run inning against the K-Tribe. Just under three weeks into the season, Yount has tied a career high with three home runs this year.
Today's Opposing Starter: LHP Nick Haughian (0-1, 9.39) makes his second start of the season and his first against Winston-Salem. In his first start of the season last Saturday vs. Lynchburg, he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits in 4.2 innings and took the loss. Haughian started the season pitching out of the bullpen, allowing seven runs in three innings over a pair of appearances. He spent most of last season as a reliever for low-A Delmarva (30 appearances) before transitioning to a starter late in the year (5 starts). He went 6-4 with a 3.97 ERA for the Shorebirds, striking out 90 batters in 93 innings. He spent most of his 2009 season with short-season Aberdeen (with two apperances for Delmarva) and played for the Iron Birds in 2008, his first professional season. Haughian was drafted by Baltimore in the ninth round in 2008 out of the University of Washington. The Marysville, WA native was 12-13 with the Huskies and spent his last two seasons there as a starting pitcher. As a junior, Haughian went 6-5 with a 3.76 ERA and led UW in complete games (3), shutouts (1), and strikeouts (107, second in the Pac-10). He was first-team All-State as a senior at Marysville-Pilchuck HS, going 10-0 with a 0.68 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 61.2 innings. He led his team to the state quarterfinals that season. Overall, he was 20-1 as a pitcher in high school. Haughian throws a low-90s fastball, a slider, and a changeup.
