Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Thursday brought a disappointing end to the Pelicans' four-game series with Potomac. After winning the first two games, Myrtle Beach dropped the final two, including this 8-6 loss as the Nationals earned a split at BB&T Coastal Field.
The P-Nats broke out with a big third inning off Pelicans' starter Robbie Ross, who had not allowed a run in 16 and two-thirds innings this season. Potomac banged out six hits and plated five as they sent ten men to the plate in the frame.
Overall on the night, Ross (2-1) was tagged for six runs on eight hits in four innings of work, he walked one and struck out two. Kasey Kiker and Andrew Doyle each allowed one run in two frames before Joe Ortiz worked a scoreless ninth for the Pelicans.
Trailing big for most of the contest, the Pelicans had plenty of chances to get back in the game off starter Trevor Holder. As a team, Myrtle Beach left 11 runners on base, as did the Nationals. Despite notching 12 hits, they were unable to get the big one on Thursday.
Holder (1-2) allowed four runs, three earned, in six innings. The righty whiffed three while walking a pair. Ryan Demmin and Adam Olbrychowski combined to shut down the Pelicans into the ninth. The Birds drew closer with two runs off Olbrychowski, but closer Pat Lehman hung on to pick up his fifth save.
The Nationals got three-hit games from Cutter Dykstra, Stephen King and J.P. Ramirez. Destin Hood was the only Potomac starter without a hit as the P-Nats knocked 15 hits, the most allowed by the Pelicans in a game in 2011.
Despite the loss, the Pelicans got production out of the eighth and ninth hitters in their lineup. Santiago Chirino was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Jared Bolden had his third straight multi-hit game as he was 3-for-4 as well with an RBI and a run. Bolden has a hit in seven of his last eight at bats.
The Nationals head to Salem for three games while the Pelicans will host the Frederick Keys for a three-game weekend set. Joe Wieland throws for Mrytle Beach against Bobby Bundy of Frederick. First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
