WINSTON-SALEM DASH (8-6, 38-45) at MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS (8-5, 52-29)
RHP J.B. Wendelken (5-6, 4.33 ERA) vs. LHP Luis Parra (6-4, 4.36 ERA)
8:05 p.m. - TicketReturn.com Field (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) Game #84 (Road Game #44)
DASH KNOCK OFF MYRTLE WEDNESDAY Winston-Salem never trailed in its 5-1 victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Wednesday night at TicketReturn.com Field. Jacob May led off the contest with a blast off the scoreboard in left-center field, and the Dash pulled ahead for good with a two-run fourth. In his return from the disabled list, 19-year-old Tyler Danish limited the Birds to one run over 4.1 frames. The bullpen trio of Kyle Hansen, Jose Bautista and Braulio Ortiz combined to blank Myrtle Beach over the final 4.2 innings to set up a rubber match.
A FIRST SINCE THE LAST May's leadoff homer was his first at the High-A level. His last long ball was a 10th-inning walk-off in the 2013 finale for Low-A Kannapolis against Hagerstown. May, who played his home games with Coastal Carolina at TicketReturn.com Field, is hitting .439 (18-for-41) with five RBIs and 13 runs scored in his last 10 games. Dating back to June 1, May's 20 stolen bases pace the Minor Leagues, while his 28 runs are third-most.
BULLPEN BREAKOUT? Winston-Salem relievers dominated the Pelicans on Wednesday night after surrendering four runs in the series opener. From June 1 until the middle match on Wednesday, the Dash's bullpen had posted a 6.33 ERA and allowed 20 of its 46 inherited runners (43%) to score. However, the Hansen-Bautista-Ortiz triumvirate gave up just two hits and stranded seven Pelicans. No Dash reliever with multiple appearances in High-A has an ERA better than 4.00.
CLIMBING THE RANKINGS Winston-Salem is one of two squads in the Carolina League that sits in the top three in both team batting average and earned run average. The Dash are third in both average (.265) and ERA (3.76), and a June surge is key to this fact. The Dash not only paced the CL with a .297 average last month, but their 3.69 ERA also led the way. Myrtle Beach is the only other team in the top three (2nd at .266; 1st at 3.35).
DeMICHELE'S DOZEN Winston-Salem infielder Joey DeMichele pushed his hitting streak to 12 with a fourth-inning single on Wednesday. During this spurt, the former Arizona State star is hitting .326 (15-for-46) with six RBIs and five runs. DeMichele has logged the sixth double-digit hit streak by a Dash hitter this season, and he is one shy of Justin Jirschele's 13-game surge for the longest by a Winston batter this season. Like many Winston-Salem hitters, DeMichele has been great since June 1 (.327, 13 RBIs, 13 runs).
BUCKING THE TRENDS Wednesday's Winston-Salem win went against some of the club's trends in 2014. The Dash improved to 9-18 when facing a left-handed starter, while they logged just their third road win in 14 tries when dueling with a southpaw starter. Winston also snapped a six-game skid against Myrtle Beach, during which the Dash had managed just 11 runs.
DEPENDABLE THREE The trio of Keon Barnum, Courtney Hawkins and Jason Coats enjoy a share of the Carolina League with 79 games played through the Dash's first 83 contests. In all of High-A baseball, only the Dash and the Stockton Ports (Oakland) boast three players with 79 or more games. However, Hawkins did leave Wednesday's game due to an injury after a remarkable catch down the left field line and is not in Thursday's lineup.
DASH DOTS Hawkins remains atop the Carolina League in RBIs with 59...Coats stands fourth with 53... Dash starter J.B. Wendelken has thrown the sixth-most innings in the CL (89.1)...He is 10.0 innings away from teammate Tony Bucciferro for the top spot...Reliever Jose Bautista has not given up a run or a hit in his last five outings spanning 7.2 frames...Thursday's game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network...The Dash are 3-4 in televised games this season through their local deal with WMYV-TV (My 48).
