Winston-Salem Dash News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Winston-Salem failed to muster much offense against Myrtle Beach starter Luis Parra, falling 4-1 in the rubber match against the Pelicans at TicketReturn.com Field on Thursday night. The game was nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
Parra (7-4) surrendered the lone Dash run on four hits in seven innings of work. Myrtle Beach reliever Abel De Los Santos followed the left-hander with two scoreless innings to register his sixth save of the season.
The Dash (8-7, 38-46) finally broke through against Parra in the seventh inning. Nick Basto, who returned from the disabled list earlier in the day, crushed his second homer of the year. The solo shot to left field cut the Winston-Salem deficit to 4-1.
Myrtle Beach (9-5, 53-29) drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs and no one on base, Nick Williams slugged his eighth home run of the season, an opposite-field blast to left against Dash starter J.B. Wendelken (5-7) to give the Pelicans a 1-0 advantage.
The first-place Pelicans added to their lead in the bottom of the third. Chris Garia, Hanser Alberto and Williams all singled to load the bases with no outs. Jorge Alfaro was hit on the left elbow by a Wendelken pitch to force Garia home, making the score 2-0. Preston Beck chased Alberto home with a fielder's choice groundout. Chris Grayson's sacrifice fly to center field completed the rally, scoring Williams for a 4-0 Myrtle Beach cushion.
Joey DeMichele's sixth inning single extended his hitting streak to 13 games, matching Justin Jirschele for the longest stretch of consecutive games with a hit by a Winston-Salem player in 2014.
The Pelicans have won seven of nine matchups with the Dash this season, including five of six meetings in Myrtle Beach.
The Dash return home to begin a three-game holiday weekend series on Friday against the Wilmington Blue Rocks at BB&T Ballpark. Right-hander Tony Bucciferro (6-6, 3.53 ERA) is scheduled to start for Winston-Salem, while Wilmington will send lefty Jonathan Dziedzic (5-5, 3.00 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Friday's game is packed with entertainment! New Wake Forest men's basketball coach Danny Manning is scheduled to throw the ceremonial first pitch, there will be a special Fourth of July salute to all military service members in attendance and a spectacular postgame fireworks show is being presented by WilcoHess. For tickets, visit wsdash.com or call (336) 714-2287.
If you can't make it to the game, you can follow all of the televised action on My 48 in the Winston-Salem area. Coverage will begin at 8 p.m., as it will be shown on a one-hour tape delay. The contest will also be broadcast on wsdash.com/broadcast, beginning with the Pregame Dash at 6:45.
