Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, lost 5-1 in the second game of the three-game series with the Winston-Salem Dash Wednesday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The Birds went just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
The Dash (8-6, 38-45) started the game by scoring immediately. Jacob May led off with his first Carolina League home run off Pelicans starter Victor Payano, and the Dash led 1-0 after the first inning.
The Pelicans (8-5, 52-29) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Preston Beck doubled to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Christopher Bostick scored Beck with an RBI single to left field, tying the score at 1-1.
The Dash took the lead for good in the fourth inning. Joey DeMichele hit a leadoff single, and advanced to third on Keon Barnum's single. DeMichele scored the go-ahead run on Cleuluis Rondon's ground out to Bostick. Winston-Salem scored their second run of the inning when Grant Buckner singled to right field. Beck's throw to home plate was in time, but a collision at home plate between Barnum and David Lyon knocked the ball out of Lyon's glove, and the Dash took a 3-1 lead.
Winston-Salem increased its lead to 4-1 in the seventh. Pelicans reliever Justin Sprenger issued a leadoff walk to Omar Narvaez, who advanced to second on a single by Buckner. Both Narvaez and Buckner advanced a base on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jason Coats. With the infield in, Keenyn Walker drove in the fourth Dash run on the night with a single past Hanser Alberto. In the next at-bat, Zach Voight grounded into a double play, one of a season-high four the Pelicans turned on the night.
In the eighth inning, the Dash added a fifth and final run.
The Pelicans had baserunners in every inning except for the third and the ninth. Myrtle Beach had the first two men on in the fourth, the first three on in the fifth, and the first two on in the seventh but failed to score in each scenario.
Kyle Hansen (5-4) picked up the win in relief. Payano (3-5) took the loss, allowing three runs over six innings.
The Birds look to win the rubber match with the Dash on Thursday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark at 8:05 p.m. Luis Parra (6-4, 4.36 ERA) starts for the Pelicans against Dash starter J.B. Wendelken (5-6 4.33 ERA). The game can be heard live on WRNN AM 1450 ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Hampton Inn Pregame Show at 7:45 p.m.
