Salem RidgeYaks News Release

The Salem Sox and Frederick Keys play the finale of their three game set tonight at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is schedule for 6:00.

Can't Dodge the Rain: For the second straight night, driving rain and unplayable field conditions ended the Salem Sox and Frederick Keys contest early. The Sox 6-2 eight inning win was the third straight scheduled contest in Frederick affected by weather. The final game of the series with Frederick on June 11th was cancelled due to rain as well. The bad weather may continue, with a 90% chance of show- ers expected at game time this evening. Salem will head to another spot they've had back luck with weather tomorrow. Each of the first two times the Sox played at Carolina, the first game of the series was postponed due to rain (4/15, 5/15). There may be a threat of rain tomorrow in Zebulon as well, with Hurricane Arthur set to hit the North Carolina coast Thursday evening into Friday morning.

Dominance on the Hill: Cody Kukuk's five scoreless innings last night continued a stretch of mound dominance for the Salem pitching staff. Over the last eight games dating back to June 25th, the Sox staff has compiled a minuscule 1.77 ERA (13 ER/66 IP). The eight starters have allowed just ten earned runs in eight games, posting a 2.13 ERA of their own in the same time span (10 ER/42.1 IP). The starter's success marked an incredible turnaround from the first half -dozen games in the half. Painfully, Salem starters surrendered 34 runs in the six games in the road trip to begin the second half, amassing a 11.62 ERA (34 ER/26.1 IP). A bit of simple math shows the bullpen has been even more dominant in this eight game stretch. The Sox pen has allowed only three earned runs in eight games, posting a 1.14 ERA (3 ER/23.2 IP).

An Impressive Start: Cody Kukuk was dominant in a much needed bounce back start last night. Kukuk got the win, going five innings, allowing just an unearned run and two hits, with three walks and six strikeouts. This comes on the heels of Kukuk's June, where he fin- ished with an 19.55 ERA in four starts in the month. He had lasted a total of just nine and two thirds in June (21 ER/9.2 IP). But last night Cody was dominant, picking up his first win since May 8th.

He's An All-Star for a Reason: The Sox turn to Justin Haley to contin- ue their dominance on the mound. Haley has posted a 2.58 ERA this season, the fourth best ERA in the league. Haley is set to make his eight start, holding a 4-2 record with a 2.57 ERA in his previous sev- en. Haley has posted quality starts five times this year, and has gone at least six innings in six of his seven starts. Haley's two appearanc- es against Frederick this year have been excellent. In one start and one relief appearance, Haley is 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA (2 ER/12.1 IP).

Power at the Top: Matty Johnson led off the game last night with a home run over the right field wall. It was just the second home run of the season for Johnson and third of his career. His last home run came in the home opener this season, on April 8th against Winston- Salem. Last night was also the first career home run for Johnson on the road, with both previous shots coming at home. Johnson only previous home run coming into the 2014 season came back in 2012, also as a member of the Salem Sox.
