Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats rolled over the Lynchburg Hillcats 10-4 on Thursday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (9-6, 38-44) picked up the series sweep as the Hillcats (7-7, 41-43) dropped their fourth straight. The brooming was the third of the year for Carolina and their first at home.
Michael Peoples (5-7) hurled five innings and giving up one run on three hits with five strikeouts in the win. Benny Suarez and Rob Nixon polished off the victory.
David Watts (0-2) took the loss for Lynchburg after the left-hander threw 4 1/3 innings, relenting six runs on seven hits.
The Mudcats went hitless through the first three innings, but Jeremy Lucas ended the drought with a one-out double in the bottom of the fourth. A single from Alex Monsalve advanced Lucas to second, and a two-out single for James Roberts dropped to the grass in the middle of three Hillcats as Lucas came in to score, evening the game at 1-1.
Carolina pulled way ahead in the fifth inning as the first four batters for the Mudcats all reached base. Logan Vick, who was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, came home on a Joe Sever single. Yhoxian Medina, Sever and Yandi Diaz crossed the plate on a three-run double from Alex Monsalve. Jerrud Sabourin followed with an RBI single to bring in Monsalve, leaving Carolina with a 6-1 lead after five.
A four-run sixth inning put the game away. Vick walked with one out to begin a rally in which five straight Carolina runners would reach base. Vick made his way to third with a steal of second and wild pitch and he scored on a double by Medina. Diaz followed Sever, who was hit by a pitch, with a two-run triple to give the Mudcats a 9-1 lead. Lucas picked up his second double of the game to drive in Diaz and give Carolina a nine-run lead through six innings.
The Hillcats looked to make the game interesting with a response in the top of the seventh. Lynchburg tallied three runs on a two-run single by Eric Garcia. Garcia made the full lap around the bases as a throwing error from Lucas bounced into centerfield, bringing the score to 10-4 Mudcats going to the bottom of the seventh, but that would be as close as they would get.
The Salem Red Sox come to town for the first of three games on Friday, July 4. The Mudcats will celebrate Independence Day with their second straight night of fireworks. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and gates open one hour beforehand.
The series continues on Saturday night at 6 p.m. with a third night of fireworks and the clubs wrap up on Sunday at 2 p.m. with World Cup Day and Kids Run the Bases, presented by Amerigas.
