Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM DASH (11-10, 41-49) vs. MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS (12-9, 56-33)
RHP Terance Marin (2-0, 2.33 ERA) vs. LHP Martire Garcia (1-0, 0.87 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, N.C.) Game #91 (Home Game #47)
PELICANS PULL AWAY WEDNESDAY Winston-Salem took a one-run lead into the fifth inning, but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans rattled off the final 10 runs of Wednesday's game at BB&T Ballpark. This 12-3 decision prevented the Dash from pushing their winning streak to a season high-tying four. The Birds scored 10 unanswered runs in the fifth through seventh frames, and they mustered 20 base hits. All nine Pelicans starters had at least one knock by the sixth frame. Despite the loss, Winston-Salem can still net a series win over the CL-leading Pelicans by claiming Thursday's homestand finale.
MARIN'S MAGIC Thursday starter Terance Marin has shined since returning to Winston-Salem. Marin was released by the White Sox on April 11, but his stellar showings with independent Evansville promoted the organization to re-sign him. Since June 20, his first outing back with the Dash, Marin is 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA (3 ER in 26.0 IP) in four scintillating starts. Before this surge, the California native had never pitched through seven innings in his Minor League career, something that he has done three times since.
RONDON, WALKER CONTINUE TO SHINE Cleuluis Rondon and Keenyn Walker recorded two hits apiece in Thursday's loss. Rondon has posted three consecutive multi-hit games, all coming in this series. During this stretch, the shortstop has five RBIs and four runs. Before this set, he was 1-for-17 (.059) since joining the Dash from Low-A Kannapolis. Walker was mired in an 0-for-20 slump before going a combined 5-for-10 on Tuesday and Wednesday. This marks his first string of back-to-back games since July 26-27, 2012, in his first stint in the Triad.
MAY'S JUNE AND JULY At the end of May, Jacob May was hitting .204. Since then, the Ohio native boasts a .346 mark, raising his overall mark 59 points to .263. During this spurt, May is tied for first in stolen bases (23) and second in runs (33) in the Minors.
HOME IMPROVING Despite Wednesday's loss, Winston-Salem has won 10 of its last 16 games at BB&T Ballpark dating back to June 7. The Dash began the season with a 12-18 home record, which was the worst such mark in the Carolina League. Winston now has the fifth-best home mark on the circuit. Entering the 2014 season, the Dash owned the third-best home record in all of full-season Minor League Baseball since 2010, when BB&T Ballpark opened its gates. Through Wednesday, the Dash are 193-134 (.573) in BB&T Ballpark's four-and-a-half year history.
A MUCH DIFFERENT FEEL This series preceded nine matchups between the Dash and Pelicans this season, and those contests featured a combined 63 runs, or a combined total of seven runs per tilt. The first three games in this set, on the flip side, have included a whopping 45 runs, 23 for Myrtle Beach and 22 for Winston-Salem. The winner of each game has plated at least six runs, a mark that was only reached three times in the first nine games of the season series.
CAROLINA CALLING Following Thursday's series finale, the Dash head to Zebulon for a four-game series with the Carolina Mudcats, who have a 5-4 edge in the season series. Winston-Salem is fighting with the Mudcats and the Salem Red Sox for the final Southern Division playoff spot. In their only other trip to Five County Stadium, the Dash earned a victory in the opener before Carolina rallied to take the series. Since the Mudcats joined the CL in 2012, the Dash are 27-22 (.551) against their newest division rival.
DASH DOTS Winston-Salem dropped to 11-21 when facing a left-handed starter...The Dash have committed seven errors in the last two games after stringing together 30 consecutive innings without making an error...The Dash and Birds will meet again in the Triad next Wednesday to Friday.
