LAST TIME OUT: The Hillcats lost a pair of finals last night to the Carolina Mudcats...First, the Mudcats defeated the Hillcats 12-4 in the completion of Tuesday's suspended game, and then they won game two 5-4...The suspended game was tied 3-3 in the sixth when it was resumed last night, but SS Erik Gonzalez broke that tie in the seventh with a two-run homer...CF Will Skinner made it a one run game by hitting a solo shot for Lynchburg in the bottom of the inning...Only trail 5-4 going to the eighth, the Hillcats watched 13 Mudcats come to the plate and score seven runs...The rally started with four singles, with a sac fly sandwiched in the middle...Then three consecutive walks plated two more runs...RHP Benino Pruneda started the inning but left after the third walk...RHP Navery Moore took over and induced a fly out before 2B James Roberts drove in two with a single, and 3B Yhoxian Medina added an RBI double to make it 12-4...Medina gave the Mudcats an early lead in game two with an RBI single in the second...LF Daniel Carroll scored on a wild pitch in the third to tied the score, and the Hillcats took the lead on a two-run bomb for Skinner in the fourth...Carolina got one back in the fifth and regained the lead in the seventh...RHP Jarett Miller went out for the seventh...He struck out the first batter, his ninth of the night, and then gave up a single...LHP Ronan Pacheco entered and walked two to load the bases...A single, an error, and a sac fly brought three runs home and the Mudcats lead 5-3....Lynchburg drew three walks in the ninth inning and scored a run on a wild pitch...They had the game-winning run at second base with two outs, but RHP Ben Heller was able to induce a fly out to center field from 2B Eric Garcia and he earned the save...The Hillcats fell to 9-11 with the two losses...They are now tied for third place in the Northern Division with the Frederick Keys, just one game behind the first place Wilmington Blue Rocks...
VS. CAROLINA: The Hillcats are 3-9 against the Mudcats this season...Carolina has swept the Hillcats twice this year, once May 5 -7 in Lynchburg and again last week July 1-3 in Carolina...Lynchburg won the only other series 2-1 in Carolina May 12-14 ...The Mudcats offense has been incredible against Lynchburg, batting .315 (136-for-432) while averaging almost 7.5 runs per game...The Hillcats hold a 6.86 ERA in the season series...The Mudcats have hit 12 home runs in 12 games...OF Todd Hankins has two home runs in just five games against Lynchburg...He's batting .474 (9-for-19) with three doubles, five RBIs, seven runs scored and three stolen bases...
LONG NIGHT: The suspended game was scheduled to pick up at 6:05pm last night but was delayed until 7:17 due to rain...It took an hour and 31 minutes to finish starting with two outs in the bottom of the third inning...Game two didn't start until 9:21, and lasted nearly three hours, ending at 12:20am ...It was the first time the Hillcats have played past midnight this season...Their previous latest night was in Winston-Salem when 46-minute rain delay and a three hour and 39 minute game kept the Hillcats Dash playing until 11:25pm ...
WHY IT TOOK A WHILE: The Hillcats allowed a season-high 13 opposing batters to come up in the eighth inning of the suspended game last night...The Mudcats scored seven runs in that inning, which matched a season-high for the Hillcats...It was the fourth time Lynchburg had surrendered seven run in an inning, and the second time that Carolina had done it against Lynchburg...They needed 12 batters to do it in the eighth inning on May 13 in a 13-5 win over the Hillcats...There were also 15 walks, 25 strikeouts,, five wild pitches, and two balks in the 12 innings played last night combined between both teams...
SKINNER DOUBLE DIPPING: OF Will Skinner hit two home runs last night, and continues to lead the team now with eight...All eight home runs have come at home this season...He's batting .286 at City Stadium this season with 27 RBIs (42 games), and hitting .261 on the road with just 11 RBIs (32 games)...Along with his eight homers, he has 26 doubles and a triple, and he ranks third in the league with 35 extra-base hits...His 26 doubles are tied for second in the circuit...He's batting .333 through nine July games with three home runs, seven RBIs, and 10 runs scored, lifting his average to .274 on the season...The only time his average has been higher this season was after going 2-for-4 Opening Day, and also when he was batting .278 following a 2-for-4 night June 23...
QUANTITY OF QUALITY: RHP Jarett Miller recorded his seventh quality start of the season last night allowing three earned runs over 6.1 innings...It was his fifth in his his last six outings...The only time he hasn't turned in a quality start over his last six starts, was a 5.2 inning, three earned run performance June 29...He is 2-0 over these six appearances, but he has left with the lead in all six games...
WILSON AT IT AGAIN: RHP Alex Wilson tossed a perfect ninth inning last night extending his scoreless innings streak to 13.1...It's his second double digit scoreless inning streak this season and the longest current streak for a Hillcat...He also has the longest streak of the season for any Hillcat when he tossed 15 consecutive scoreless frames from May 8 - June 7 ...He leads the team with nine saves this season, which is tied for third in the Carolina League...In 25 appearances this season, he has allowed runs only five times, and is yet to blow a save...In 44.1 innings he has 42 strikeouts and just 12 walks...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP D.J. Brown was selected in the 39th round of the 2012 draft out of James Madison University by the Cleveland Indians...The Fredericksburg, VA native spent most of his freshman season in college as a weekend starter...He was then honored as the Relief Pitcher of the Year at JMU his sophomore year...Missed his entire junior season in 2012 due to injury, but was still drafted by the Indians...He set a Guinness World Record as part of a 201 person game of knockout after a JMU basketball game...He made his professional debut in 2013 with Low-A Lake County...Went 3-4 with a 2.71 ERA in 27 games, two starts...He struck out 71 and walked just 20 in 66.1 innings...This season, he is 2-5 with a 4.64 ERA for the Mudcats in 17 games, 13 starts, but hasn't won since April 24 ...Was 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA in April...In one previous start against the Hillcats, he lost giving up five runs, four earned, on 11 hits, while walking one, hitting a batter, and striking out two in 6.2 innings...
