Carolina Mudcats News Release
Lynchburg, Va. - The Carolina Mudcats polished off a 5-4 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats shortly after midnight on Thursday morning at Calvin Falwell Field. The Mudcats (12-9, 41-47) remain locked in a tie with Myrtle Beach for first place in the Southern Division and have won nine of 12 against the Hillcats (9-11, 43-47).
Michael Peoples (6-7) delivered his longest outing of the year, holding the Hillcats to three runs on four hits across 6.2 innings. He struck out eight and walked two. Ben Heller worked out of a bases-loaded jam to record his first save in the Carolina League.
Ronan Pacheco (2-1) took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit and two walks in just a third of an inning.
The Mudcats opened the scoring in the second inning when Yandy Diaz singled and scored on a base hit by Yhoxian Medina. Lynchburg responded with three straight, however. A wild pitch scored Daniel Carroll in the third and Will Skinner put the Hillcats up 3-1 on a two-run homer to left.
Hillcats' starter Jarrett Miller held the Mudcats at bay for much of the night. The right-hander struck out nine, but allowed a second run in the fifth. Todd Hankins singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single to right by LeVon Washington.
Down 3-2 going to the seventh, Carolina's offense came to life. Erik Gonzalez singled to left with one out and Miller was lifted for Pacheco. A wild pitched advanced Gonzalez to second and Washington drew a walk. With Diaz hitting, Pacheco uncorked another wild pitch to put the runners in scoring position before issuing a walk to Diaz.
Jerrud Sabourin dropped in a single to left, scoring Gonzalez to tie the score. Alex Monsalve reached on a failed force attempt at second base when Eric Garcia dropped the ball. Washington scored on the play and Ryan Battaglia followed with a sac-fly to center for a 5-3 advantage.
The Hillcats took advantage of an erratic Heller in the ninth to make one last rally. The right-hander walked the bases-loaded with two out and a wild pitch drew Lynchburg within a run. Heller was able to settle in and retire Garcia on a fly ball to left-center to nail down the victory.
The Mudcats look for the series win against the Hillcats on Thursday night. First pitch in Lynchburg is set for 7:05 p.m. Carolina returns home to host the Winston-Salem Dash with the first of four games on Friday, July 11.
