Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Winston-Salem used two home runs and another strong outing from Terance Marin to earn a 3-2 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at BB&T Ballpark on Thursday night.
With the victory, the Dash (12-10, 42-49) captured the series against the first-place Pelicans, winning three of four contests in the Triad while inching closer in the Southern Division standings.
Winston-Salem struck early in the bottom of the first inning against Myrtle Beach starter Martire Garcia (1-2). Jacob May led off the frame with a homer into the Foothills Brew Pen, his second round-tripper of the season. Later in the inning, Jason Coats singled and was chased home on a Keon Barnum double to left-center field to give the Dash a 2-0 lead.
Myrtle Beach (12-10, 56-34) got on the board in the top of the second against Marin (3-0). David Lyon was hit by a pitch and later scored on a double by Kevin Torres, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Dash got that run back in the bottom of the third. With two outs and no one on base, Joey DeMichele lifted a fly ball into the bleachers in right field for a solo homer. DeMichele's third dinger of the year provided Winston-Salem with a 3-1 cushion.
Marin kept the best offensive team in the Carolina League off balance, pitching seven and one-third innings. The right-hander allowed one run and six hits while striking out seven Pelicans' batters.
Myrtle Beach had one last gasp in the top of the ninth inning. With one out, Edwin Garcia doubled against Dash reliever Jose Bautista. With Jorge Alfaro coming up to pinch-hit for the Pelicans, Kyle Hansen was summoned from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed singles to Alfaro and Luis Mendez, plating Garcia to make it a 3-2 game.
As a nervous crowd of 4,017 at BB&T Ballpark looked on, Hansen recorded the final two outs to earn his second save of the season and preserve the series win for Winston-Salem.
The Dash will hit the road for a big four-game series against the division rival Carolina Mudcats, beginning Friday night in Zebulon. Winston-Salem will send right-hander Angel Sanchez (1-0, 1.29 ERA) to the mound, while Carolina counters with righty Adam Plutko (1-4, 4.83 ERA). First pitch at Five County Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
