Frederick Keys News Release
SALEM, VA -The Frederick Keys are pleased to announce that Michael Burgess has been named the Carolina League Player of the Month for June. The announcement was made by Minor League Baseball on Thursday, while the award was voted on by all eight Carolina League managers. It is the second time that Burgess has been recognized this year, after winning the CL "Player of the Week" award for June 9-15.
Burgess, 25, comes off a monster month of June where he hit .371 with nine homers, three triples, seven doubles and drove in 22 runs. The nine home runs were the most by a Carolina League player, and tied for the fourth-most by a minor leaguer in June. Burgess also led the CL in total bases (73), extra-base hits (19) and slugging percentage (.820). He placed second in the circuit in batting average and triples while his 22 RBIs were third-most by a CL player during the season's third month.
Signed by Baltimore as a free agent on February 20, 2014, Burgess has been one of the league's top offensive performers in 2014. Entering Thursday's action, the Keys outfielder is tops in the CL in RBIs (66), extra-base hits (46), doubles (27), and total bases (170). Additionally, he rates second in home runs (15), hits (90), slugging percentage (.603), home run to at-bat ratio (1/18.80) as well as fifth in batting average (.319).
Originally selected by Washington in the first round of the 2007 draft, Burgess spent all of 2013 with the Astros organization. Playing for the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks, he hit .203 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs as well as 20 doubles over 98 games.
The Keys go for a series sweep of the Salem Red Sox on Thursday night when Dylan Bundy (0-0, 5.79) takes the mound against Sox righty Pat Light (3-4, 5.92). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Salem Memorial Ballpark, and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source. Frederick returns to Harry Grove Stadium on Friday, when the Potomac Nationals come to town. For ticket information, fans can call 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
