VAUGHN HOMERS IN 4-3 LOSS

In his first game at the High-A level, White Sox 2019 first-round pick Andrew Vaughn launched a three-run homer, but the Dash ultimately fell 4-3 to the Lynchburg Hillcats on Wednesday at BB&T Ballpark. With the Dash trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Vaughn stepped to the plate against Hillcats reliever Jonathan Teaney with runners at first and second. The former Golden Spikes Award winner then blasted the 0-1 pitch over the knoll in left field for a three-run homer. But, Teaney recovered to toss a scoreless eighth and Yapson Gomez earned the save by pitching a scoreless ninth to propel Lynchburg to the win.

MORE ON VAUGHN

Prior to joining the White Sox system, Vaughn had an incredible career at Cal. As a sophomore in 2018, the first baseman won the Golden Spikes Award as the best amateur baseball player in the United States and the Pac-12 Player of the Year. Vaughn posted a .402/.531/.819 batting line, while hitting 23 home runs and striking out just 18 times. Vaughn is the highest drafted player in Cal history.

FIRST-ROUNDERS IN WINSTON

Since 2014, the Dash have had the White Sox first-round pick (or picks) in five out of the last six years, with the lone exception coming in 2017 when Jake Burger finished out his season with Low-A Kannapolis. Here is the full look over the years:

2014: LHP Carlos Rodon (3rd overall)

2015: RHP Carson Fulmer (8th overall)

2016: C Zack Collins (10th overall) and RHP Zack Burdi (26th overall)

2018: INF Nick Madrigal (4th overall)

2019: INF Andrew Vaughn (3rd overall)

SPEAKING OF FIRST-ROUND PICKS

Dash alumnus Nick Madrigal was promoted to Triple-A Charlotte from Double-A Birmingham, the White Sox announced on Wednesday. After starting the season with the Dash, Madrigal posted a .341/.400/.451 batting line with 14 stolen bases over 42 games with the Barons. In 49 games with the Dash, Madrigal recorded a .272 batting average.

BIG RED TAKES THE MOUND

Right-hander Jake Elliott will make his fourth spot start of the season on Thursday. The Texas native was drafted by the White Sox in 15th round out of the University of Oklahoma. In his three starts prior to tonight, Elliott is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA. This season is not the first time Elliott has donned a Dash uniform. For one game in 2017, Elliott suited up for Winston-Salem. On August 4 of that season, the Texas native gave up two earned runs in one inning against the Potomac Nationals, but the Dash went on to win 8-2 thanks to a four-RBI night from then Dash outfielder Eloy Jimenez. The former Sooner would pitch the rest of the season in Kannapolis. More information is available on page 3.

THE GIVE AND TAKE OFFENSIVELY

The offense has been up and down for Winston-Salem in the second half. Over the first 39 games of the second half, Winston-Salem has scored just 147 runs, equating to about 3.8 runs per game. Despite some early offensive struggles to start the second half, the Dash are the only team in the Carolina League that is in the top three in batting average (3rd, .252), on-base percentage (1st, .333) and slugging percentage (2nd, .384). Meanwhile, the Dash are third in homers (74).

NOT MUCH SEPARATION

Outside of three games, the Dash have only played contests where the margin of victory or defeat was more than four runs in the second half. Here is the breakdown of the Dash's record in those 36 games:

One-run games: 5-9

Two-run games: 4-5

Three-run games: 5-3

Four-run games: 3-2

AN ALUMNUS SHINES AT A NEW LEVEL

Luis Robert, who began the season with Winston-Salem, is posting a 1.135 OPS in Triple-A Charlotte. Rated the fifth-best prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, Robert posted a .453/.512/.920 batting line in 19 games for the Dash this year. Across three levels, the 21-year-old is hitting .349 with 22 homers in 93 games.
