Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C - The Dash racked up nine runs on 14 hits to claim a 9-7 slugfest over the Lynchburg Hillcats in front of 5,972 fans on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark.
Winston-Salem (19-21, 57-47) scored six runs on seven hits in the first inning and continued to pile on in the second and third. The offensive onslaught was highlighted by Steele Walker, who went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. It was the third straight multi-hit effort for the former second-round pick.
Meanwhile, Jacob Lindgren (1-0) earned the win by tossing three hitless frames. The left-hander was dominant, totaling five strikeouts on the night.
The Hillcats (18-21, 50-56) jumped out to a quick lead against Dash starter Jake Elliott in the top of the first. Tyler Freeman led off the game with a triple before coming in to score on a single by Steven Kwan. Following Kwan's single, Mitch Reeves and Will Benson drew back-to-back walks.
With the bases loaded, Wilbis Santiago blooped a single into center field, scoring Kwan to make it 2-0. After Jodd Carter flied out to center field, Mike Rivera hit a sacrifice fly to score Reeves and make it 3-0. However, Benson was thrown out at third base on the play to end the inning.
The Dash struck back against Hillcats starter Kirk McCarty (2-4) in the bottom of the first. To lead off the frame, Walker singled through the right side. Then, Johan Cruz doubled into the left-field corner, advancing Walker to third. The next batter, Andrew Vaughn, hit a sacrifice fly to center, making it 3-1.
Continuing the rally, Craig Dedelow singled through the right side to advance Cruz to third. Then, McCarty fired a wild pitch, scoring Cruz to cut the Hillcats lead to a run.
Following the wild pitch, Carlos Perez walked and Jameson Fisher singled to load the bases. Then, Tate Blackman hit an infield single in front of home plate to score Dedelow and tie the contest at three. JJ Muno then blooped a single into center field, scoring Perez to make it 4-3. Yeyson Yrizarri added to the inning by hitting into a fielder's choice, scoring Fisher to make it 5-3.
Circling back to the top of the order, Walker capped the scoring in the frame by singling through the right side to bring home Blackman. Though the Dash held a 6-3 lead, the scoring was far from over.
In the top of the second, Jonathan Laureano led off the inning by drawing a walk. Then, Luke Wakamatsu blasted a two-run homer to right field, cutting the Winston-Salem lead to a run.
However, the Dash responded again in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Perez and Fisher hit back-to-back singles before Blackman drove in Perez with an opposite-field single to make it 7-5.
Winston-Salem increased its lead in the bottom of the third. Following an Yrizarri double, Walker blasted a two-run homer into the right field seats. It was Walker's eighth home run of the season.
The Hillcats added two more on another Wakamatsu home run in the top of the seventh to make it 9-7. However, Luis Ledo, Kevin Escorcia and Bennett Sousa combined to hold Lynchburg scoreless in the final two frames.
The Dash begin a three-game set with the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night. Right-hander Kade McClure (2-2, 2.56 ERA) will take the hill for Winston-Salem against fellow righty Christian Taugner (4-7, 5.04 ERA). First pitch is set for 7 p.m., and fans can catch all of the action on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App.
Friday's series opener will be a Fireworks Friday. Saturday's contest will be the annual Energize the Ballpark Night, with a live concert following the game featuring Two-time Grammy-Award winning Gospel artist Jason Crabb.
The homestand finale on Sunday will be a Lowes Foods Family Sunday. Kids Run the Bases presented by New Balance Winston-Salem will follow each of the weekend's games. For tickets and more information, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
