Down East Wood Ducks News Release

Zebulon, N.C. - Noah Zavolas was strong for the Mudcats on the hill, while their offense exploded for a five-run seventh, on the way to a 7-0 win over the Wood Ducks, to salvage the finale of the three game series.

Down East (25-15, 75-35) suffers their sixth loss of the season, and falls to Carolina (17-24, 56-54) for just the first time since May 24.

The Mudcats took the lead in the third inning. With two outs, Mario Feliciano doubled to right-center, and then Tristen Lutz reached on an infield single to put runners at the corners. Peyton Henry then lined a single through the left side, to put Carolina ahead, 1-0, against John King.

King (loss, 2-3) gave up one run on seven hits in four innings. He walked three and struck out four. Despite working with men on in every inning, the Wood Ducks defense turned three double plays behind him to limit damage.

Carolina added a run in the sixth inning against Scott Engler. Pat McInerney doubled down the left field line, and then with two outs, came into score when Zach Clark beat out an infield single to make it 2-0.

Meanwhile, Zavolas (win, 6-5) was dominant on the mound for Carolina. Zavolas gave up just a walk and three hits over six scoreless innings, striking out eight. He retired 12 of the first 13 men he faced, including 11 in a row.

The Mudcats pulled away in the seventh against Francisco Villegas. Feliciano worked a walk to begin the inning, and one batter later, Lutz blasted a two-run home run to left, his tenth of the season, to make it a 4-0 lead. After back-to-back walks to Henry and Wes Rogers, Eddie Silva followed with a three-run homer, his ninth of the season, to push the advantage to 7-0. Lutz and McInerney both finished with four-hit ballgames, as the Muddies tallied 13 hits on the night.

Robbie Hitt followed Zavolas with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Carolina, and Anthony Bender capped the night with a scoreless ninth. The Wood Ducks stranded six men on base on the night, going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Sam Huff did extend his hitting streak to 19-straight with a first inning double.

Down East returns home Friday for a three-game series against the Frederick Keys. Right-hander Ofelky Peralta will make the start for Frederick, while the Wood Ducks have yet to name their starter for the contest. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and the pregame show will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
