Offense Goes Silent in Finale in Wilmington
August 1, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
Hoping to extend their winning streak to a franchise record six games on Thursday night, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers came one run short, dropping the finale of their three-game series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 3-2. Fayetteville saw their dominant 23-inning scoreless streak end when Luis Garcia allowed Wilmington to plate three runs in the fifth inning. That offense turned out to be just enough to doom Fayetteville, as the Woodpeckers only got on the board thanks to a two-run home run by Miguelangel Sierra.
Just as they had in the first two game of the tilt, both offenses were silent over the first four innings of the game. Brett Conine kept Wilmington hitless over his first three innings, but labored through over 20 pitches in the fourth, needing to strand the bases loaded to maintain the scoreless contest. In a scheduled tandem, Conine departed after the fourth inning in favor of Luis Garcia, but the new right0hander for Fayetteville failed to avoid bats early on. Garcia (L, 3-4) walked the first batter he faced, allowed a single to the second, and an RBI double by Ricky Aracena to surrender the first run by Fayetteville pitching since July 28th. Garcia threw a wild pitch to surrender another run before recording an out, and a groundout later in the frame brought home a final run. Garcia was able to settle from that trouble, allowing only one baserunner over his next two frames, and reliever Cesar Rosado tossed a scoreless eighth inning in relief, but the damage was still too much to overcome for the Fayetteville offense.
Right-hander Johnathan Bowlan got the start for Wilmington, and while he needed nearly 100 pitches, Bowlan (W, 5-2) never allowed a runner to reach third base. After lefty Josh Dye logged a pair of outs to finish the sixth inning, Fayetteville broke the shutout in the seventh against Robert Garcia. Chandler Taylor led off the frame with a line drive single to center field, and Miguelangel Sierra followed with an opposite field home run, his ninth homer of the year. While Fayetteville did cut the lead to only one run, Sierra's home run would turn to be the last baserunner for Fayetteville on the night, as Garcia and Tad Ratliff (S, 20) retired four straight batters to close the night.
While Fayetteville fails to secure a six-game win streak, Fayetteville still maintains their two-game lead in the playoff hunt for the South Division, thanks to a Myrtle Beach loss. Fayetteville will have an impactful series following a lengthy return to Fayetteville, as the Woodpeckers set for a three-game series with the same Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The Woodpeckers return to Segra Stadium on Friday to open the series, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00PM.
