August 1, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, Va. - Lynchburg Hillcats outfielder Oscar Gonzalez has been promoted to Double-A Akron, the Cleveland Indians announced on Wednesday. Gonzalez, 21, was a mid-season All-Star for the second time in his career.
In his first year with the Hillcats, the right-handed hitter leads the Carolina League with a .319 batting average at the time of his departure. He is also tops in the league in hits (123), total bases (175) and is fourth in the CL in RBIs (61).
This year, the Dominican Republic native belted eight home runs and a team-leading 22 doubles. He hit .335 in the first half of the season, with his best month coming in April, when the outfielder hit .351 with two homers and 22 RBIs.
Signed as an International Free Agent in 2014, Gonzalez is in his sixth season in the Indians farm system. He registered 35 multi-hit games with Lynchburg in 2019, leading the team. This marks the first in-season promotion of Gonzalez's career.
Gonzalez will join the RubberDucks club immediately, and figures to be in Akron's everyday outfield plans for the remainder of the season.
The Hillcats and Winston-Salem Dash will wrap up their series on Thursday with the rubber match of the three-game set. Left-hander Kirk McCarty (2-3, 3.64) will start for Lynchburg, opposite of Winston-Salem righty Jake Elliott (4-2, 3.99). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark.
Max Gun and Anders Jorstad will be on the air at 6:50 p.m. with the Hillcats pre-game show on TuneIn Radio and the Radio434 App.
The Hillcats will return to City Stadium on August 16 when the Carolina Mudcats, A-Adv. affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers come to town for a three-game set. Weekend highlights include First Responders Night on Saturday with post-game fireworks sponsored by Hill City Pharmacy. Friday's contest will also feature a post-game fireworks show presented by Pepsi. Sunday's game will be a Sandlot Sunday where all kids in attendance will be able to run the bases after the conclusion of the game.
