Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Nevin Griffith pitched seven outstanding innings and the Dash bats provided sufficient offense as Winston-Salem won its fourth straight ballgame with a 7-3 victory over the Kinston Indians (3-6) at BB&T Ballpark on Saturday night. Joe McEwing's squad has won back-to-back series at home and will go for the three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon.

The Dash (6-3) got off to a quick start in the first inning against Kinston starter T.J. House (0-2). Brandon Short doubled on House's first pitch of the game and moved to second when Eduardo Escobar fought off an 0-2 offering to right for a base hit. Jon Gilmore drove them both home with a double to right to give Winston a 2-0 lead.

After a walk to Seth Loman and a Kenny Williams, Jr. fly ball, Luis Sierra rolled a grounder to second base. Jason Kipnis flipped to second for the force out, but shortstop Ronald Rivas' relay to first was wide of the bag for an error, allowing Gilmore to score the third Dash run of the inning. It was Rivas' seventh error of the season and his fourth in the last two nights.

Winston-Salem added one more in the second when Short drove home Drew Garcia with an RBI ground out, pushing the Dash advantage to 4-0.

The offense kept things comfortable for starter Nevin Griffith, who didn't look like he needed much help as he confounded the K-Tribe for the second consecutive outing. The only run he allowed came in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Kyle Bellows.

Griffith (2-0) went seven innings, the longest start by a Dash pitcher all season. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out six Indians without walking a batter.

Winston-Salem added some insurance runs in the sixth when Garcia hit a towering two-run home run to right field, his first of the season. The Dash tacked on one more in the eighth on an Ozzie Lewis RBI double to right, scoring Loman and making it 7-1.

Santos Rodriguez allowed a pair of runs in the ninth to account for the final margin.

The Dash did not commit an error in the game. It was the first time since the season opener on April 8th the team played an errorless contest.

The three-game series concludes on Sunday afternoon, the first day game at BB&T Ballpark. Stephen Sauer (0-0, 4.50) gets the nod for the Dash against Joey Mahalic (1-0, 1.80). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The webcast pre-game show begins at 1:45 on www.wsdash.com.
