Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
The Keys jumped out to a five-run lead early on the Cats and won 6-4 on Saturday afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium.
Frederick started the scoring with a two-run second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Buck Britton smacked a two-run double into the gap in right-center with two outs in match in the frame.
An inning later another two-out, two-run RBI hit would put the Cats in a 4-0 whole. Bill Rowell plated a pair with his base hit to give him three RBI thus far in the series.
The Keys tacked on another run to their lead with a solo home run by Britton in the fourth inning. The third RBI of the game for Britton made it a 5-0 lead for Frederick.
Lynchburg would plate their first run in the fifth inning with an RBI sac fly by Neftali Soto to pull the Cats back within four.
In the sixth inning the Keys would get that run back with a two-out RBI single for L.J. Hoes. The speedy second baseman was thrown out by Josh Fellhauer trying to stretch his hit into a double. That was the second outfield assist of the season for Fellhauer.
The scoring continued in the seventh when Lynchburg brought in two more runs. Carlos Mendez drove-in a pair with a two-out single and Lynchburg trailed 6-3 at that point. Mendez had two hits on the day and he has now hit in all nine games the Hillcats have played.
Lynchburg would close within a pair with another run in the eighth inning. Miguel Rojas singled in Chris McMurray to make it a 6-4 contest. Rojas went 3-for-3 in the game and is now 6-for-7 in the series.
That would prove to be the final as Brandon Cooney would pitch a perfect ninth to notch his first save of the season. The win went to starter Cole McCurry (1-0) for Frederick (5-4). Starter Travis Webb (0-1) took the loss for Lynchburg (4-5).
The rubber match in the three-game is set for Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium. Right-hander Mark Serrano will get his first start of the season for Lynchburg opposite righty Kenny Moreland (1-0, 0.00) for Frederick.
