Potomac Nationals News Release
(WILMINGTON, DE) The Potomac Nationals split a doubleheader with the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium. They closed out the first game - resumed from last night with the Nats leading 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth - without much difficulty and rolled to a 7-3 victory. Sloppy defense and pitching spoiled the nightcap, and the Blue Rocks earned a split with a 7-2 win.
Cory VanAllen got the final out of the fifth in relief of Evan Bronson - who was impressive and one out away from a win when the game was suspended. The Nats went right back to work offensively in the sixth and tacked on two more runs on base hits by Michael Burgess and Brian Peacock.
VanAllen earned his first win of the season. Jesse Estrada pitched the final two innings and gave up just one run, and the P-Nats had their second road victory of 2010.
In the nightcap, starter A.J. Morris showed a little rust in his Potomac debut. The righthander allowed three runs, although only one of them was earned due to two throwing errors from Morris.
Potomac tied the game at two in the fourth inning, but the Blue Rocks scored three in the fifth and never looked back. The big blow was a bases-clearing triple from Jose Alfaro off reliever Luis Garcia. A fourth run would score on a wild pitch later in the sixth.
Blue Rocks starter Ivor Hodgson was impressive, yelding two runs in four innings on just two hits. The lefthander struck out three and gave way to Manauris Baez, who earned the win with two innings of one-hit scoreless ball.
The teams will decide the series on Sunday at 1:35 PM. The broadcast can be heard on potomacnationals.com beginning at 1:20.
