Rochester Red Wings News Release

The Red Wings won a wild one 9-8 over Durham in 10 innings late Thursday night at Frontier Field - the eighth straight win for the Wings. With one out, the bases loaded, and a pulled-in infield, Jason Tyner hit a grounder to shortstop B.J. Upton. Upton made a wild throw home, which allowed Garrett Jones to score the tying run; Gil Velazquez, who was hustling around third, ended up scoring the winning run when no one covered home. Velazquez was also great in the field, starting a triple play.

The Wings head to Pennsylvania Friday to start a four-game series against second place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, before returning to Frontier next Tuesday for another eight-game homestand.

After giving up back-to-back singles to lead off the first inning, Rochester starting pitcher Jason Miller caught a break. With the runners going, Upton lined out to the diving second baseman Velazquez who then stepped on second and threw to first to complete the triple play.

Miller ran into trouble again in the top of the second giving up a lead-off base hit and back-to-back walks to load the bases. After getting Brent Butler to pop out, Luis Rivas hit a ball to deep center where Tyner made a running catch to take away an extra-base hit. Rivas had to settle for an RBI sacrifice fly, and the Bulls led 1-0.

Bulls starter Chris Seddon allowed a leadoff single to Tyner in the Red Wings first, but a double play helped him out of the inning without allowing a run. In the second, the Red Wings had six straight batters reach base and pushed across two runs to take the lead 2-1. Kevin West doubled to start the inning, and two batters later Velazquez drilled an RBI single to score West. Glenn Williams singled to load the bases for Andres Torres; Torres entered the game 2-for-3 with 5 RBI in bases loaded at-bats. Seddon got a big break when third baseman Fernando Cortez made a diving stop of Torres' hard hit ball that seemed headed for the left field corner; Torres settled for a fielder's choice and RBI that put the Wings ahead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Wings broke the 2-2 tie with a RBI double by Williams. He drove in Velazquez, who reached base with a single.

The Wings started the top of the 5th with a fine defensive play by Williams. On a pop-up foul ball down the third base line, Williams reached over the fence of the Durham dugout to make the catch.

Th top of the 6th yielded trouble for relief pitcher Henry Bonilla. Giving up two singles and a walk to load the bases, Bonilla got Butler to ground into a 6-4-3 double play that scored Elijah Dukes. The Wings then brought in Beau Kemp to face right hand hitter Rivas; Rivas singled to score Dukes to take a 4-3 lead. With runners threatening on first and third, Kemp got Darnell McDonald to pop out to right field to end the inning.

The Bulls tacked on another run in the top of the seventh. Upton reached base with a walk and stole his league leading 25th stolen base. Dukes drove him in with his fourth hit of the night.

The Wings came back in grand fashion during the bottom of the seventh. Williams led off the inning with a base hit and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tyner singled, and Jason Bartlett loaded the bases with a walk. After Jo! sh Rabe struck out, that left things up to West. West launched a 3-2 pitch out past the left field fence for a grand slam. West is 2-for-2 with 5 RBI with the bases loaded this season.

Pat Neshek entered the game in the eighth inning. Neshek gave up a solo home run, only the second home run to a right handed batter this season. Neshek ran into trouble in the ninth, scattering a few bloop singles that eventually led to a tie ballgame.

The Wings had a chance to win it in the ninth but did not capitalize. With runners on first and second and none out, the Wings failed to score.

Durham scored a run in the top of the tenth off Ricky Barrett (4-1). Rivas hit a triple to right field. Kevin Cash doubled to left to drive in Rivas to take the lead 8-7. J.D Miadich pitched the 10th and took the loss for Durham.
