Norfolk Tides News Release
June 8, 2006 - Syracuse's Russ Adams houd four hits and four RBI, lifting the SkyChiefs to a 6-2 win over the Tides Thursday afternoon in front of 9,369 fans at Harbor Park.
Adams, who was optioned to Syracuse on May 25 after opening the season with Toronto, singled four times and walked in the contest, helping the SkyChiefs win the final three games of the four-game set. The 25-year-old out of the University of North Carolina drove home a run in the second inning, two more in the third, and one more in the sixth.
The Tides had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, connecting for four straight one-out hits off of Syracuse starter Josh Towers (2-1). Michael Tucker singled home the first run with a single to right, and Victor Diaz followed with the first of his three singles to drive in Jose Offerman.
After allowing the four hits in the first, Towers settled down immediately, facing just one batter over the minimum over the next seven innings. The 29-year-old right-hander allowed eight hits in 8.0 innings, and was helped out as the SkyChief defense turned four double plays behind him on the afternoon.
Dave Williams (1-2) took the loss for Norfolk, allowing five runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of work. Williams walked four and struck out two, as the Tides finished up the eight-game homestand 1-7.
The Tides bullpen of Mitch Wylie, Tim LaVigne, Royce Ring and Mike Adams pitched very well, combining to allow just one run on five hits over the final 6.1 innings.
Norfolk will head to Durham Friday night for a four-game series with the Bulls before returning for an eight-game homestand at Harbor Park starting Tuesday. Jose Lima (4-4, 4.35) is scheduled to take the mound for Norfolk against Durham right-hander Jason Hammel (3-4, 3.81), with first pitch from Durham Bulls Athletic Park scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
