The IronPigs were playing their first game since Friday due to weather, and lead-off batter Darnell Sweeney opened the game against Logan Darnell with a long flyball to the wall in center. A leaping Darin Mastroianni just missed snagging it, and and Sweeney made it to third base. One out later, Andrew Knapp lifted a two-run homer over the wall in center for a 2-0 IronPigs lead.

Zach Eflin was making his first Triple-A start, after an All-Star season with the Phillies' Double-A Reading club. Eflin worked around a walk and single in the first inning, helped out when catcher Knapp threw out Mastroianni trying to steal second base.

Darnell got some defensive help in the top of the second, with left fielder Buck Britton's diving catch robbing Cam Perkins of a hit.

After Darnell retired the side in order in the second and third innings, the Wings loaded the bases in their half of the third. A walk and a pair of singles set up a sacrifice fly from Jorge Polanco, and the Wings had cut the lead in half to make it a 2-1 game.

In the top of the fourth inning Darnell struggled as he gave up two hits and walked another. Thanks to a slick double play started by Heiker Meneses, he only surrendered one run, giving the IronPigs a 3-1 lead.

The fifth inning wasn't any easier for Darnell as he gave up three runs. This included Sweeney's second triple of the game and a two-run shot by Tommy Joseph, which put the Red Wings down 6-1. Darnell (0-1) exited after five innings, having allowed seven hits and six earned runs with three walks. He threw 76 pitches, 42 for strikes. Buddy Boshers made his Red Wings debut, coming in to pitch the sixth inning.

Boshers retired the first two batters he faced, then got into a jam after a pair of singles, a fielding error, and a walk loaded the bases. But Boshers caught top prospect Nick Williams looking at a called third strike to keep the contest at 6-1. Dan Runzler pitched the seventh inning for the Wings.

Colton Murray took over for Eflin in the seventh inning, after Eflin (1-0) allowed five hits, one earned run, two walks and three strikeouts. Eflin threw 85 pitches, 54 for strikes.

The Wings put two runners on with two outs against Murray but couldn't score.

Lehigh Valley out-hit the Red Wings 10-6.

Game Two:

In the second game of the doubleheader the Wings send RHP David Martinez to the mound to take on RHP Mark Appel for the IronPigs. Appel was acquired via trade from the Houston Astros, he was their number one pick (number one overall) in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.

In his first inning of work, Martinez gave up a double but looked sharp otherwise as he allowed no other baserunners and got out of the inning giving up no runs. Appel looked like a top pick in the bottom of the first. He hit his spots and located his pitches well, quickly setting down the side in order.

In the top of the second, the bases were loaded thanks to two hits from Lehigh Valley and an error from Wilfredo Tovar. But, Martinez was able to work out of the jam with just one run allowed thanks to a double play from Jorge Polanco.

The third inning saw the IronPigs push across a second run on an RBI single from J.P. Arencibia after a one out triple from Nick Williams. The Wings were able to get two runners on base via walk in the bottom of the third, but were unable to push any runs across.

The bottom of the fourth saw the Wings get their second hit of the game as Reynaldo Rodriguez laced a single into center field. But they were unable to capitalize as Appel quieted the other bats for another inning.

Appel (1-0) struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth, before Rodriguez picked up his second hit of the game. That concluded Appel's start, working 5.2 innings and allowing five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Appel threw 83 pitches, 54 for strikes. Elvis Araujo came on to face Juan Centeno, and a groundout ended the inning.

Martinez took the mound to start the seventh inning, allowing a single and a sacrifice bunt before giving way to Ryan O'Rourke out of the bullpen. The IronPigs pulled off a double steal after a single to make it 3-0, and another base hit extended the lead to 4-0.

Martinez (0-1) worked 6.1 innings in his Red Wing debut, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and a walk. He threw 88 pitches, 53 for strikes.

NOTES: Lehigh Valley was playing for the first time since Friday, with weather affecting most of their opening schedule. They scored a total of two runs in those first two games...OF Adam Brett Walker was a late scratch from the game one lineup as DH, and did not play in either contest.
