Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (2-2) notched the doubleheader sweep of the Rochester Red Wings (2-3) with a 6-1 victory in game one and a 4-0 decision in game two on Tuesday night at Frontier Field.

The series will wrap up on Wednesday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. as RHP David Buchanan (4-2, 2.80 with LHV in '15) toes the rubber for the Pigs vs. Rochester RHP Tyler Duffey (0-0, 0.00).

This marks the first time the IronPigs have swept a doubleheader since they did so on July 19, 2014 at Syracuse.

Game One

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs captured game one of the doubleheader by a score of 6-1 over the Rochester Red Wings on Tuesday night.

Lehigh Valley starter Zach Eflin (1-0) allowed just a run on five hits to go along with two walks and three strikeouts over 6.0 IP in his Triple-A debut.

The IronPigs took an early 2-0 lead in the top half of the first as Darnell Sweeney led off with a triple and later scored on Andrew Knapp's two-run shot off of Rochester starter Logan Darnell.

It was the first home run of the season for Knapp (3-3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) and the first of his career at Triple-A.

Rochester got a run back in the third as Heiker Meneses drew a one-out walk, moved to third after a pair of singles and scored on Jorge Polanco's sac fly to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

Lehigh Valley used a two-out rally to extend the lead to 3-1 with a run in the top of the fourth. Will Venable reached via a two-out walk issued by Darnell, advanced to third on a bloop single from Cam Perkins and scored on Angelys Nina's RBI single.

A three-run fifth opened up a 6-1 lead for the Pigs. Sweeney (2-3, 2 3B, 2 R) knocked his second triple of the game with one out before scoring on a Nick Williams sac fly and Tommy Joseph delivered a two-run shot in the inning.

Darnell (0-1) was tagged with all six runs as he allowed the six runs on seven hits while walking three over five innings of work.

Sweeney becomes just the third IronPig ever to hit two triples in a game and the first to do so since Pete Orr on July 13, 2012.

RHP Colton Murray (1.0 IP, H, 2 BB) tossed a scoreless inning in relief for manager Dave Brundage's squad.

Game Two

Making his IronPigs debut, RHP Mark Appel tossed 5.2 shutout innings as Lehigh Valley completed the doubleheader sweep of Rochester with a 2-0 win in game two.

Appel gave up five hits while walking a pair and fanning five in his 5.2 IP of work.

With a runner at first and two outs in the sixth, LHP Elvis Araujo came on in relief of Appel and was able to get a groundout and end the inning. Araujo (1.1 IP, BB, K) got the final four outs to notch his first save of the young season.

The Pigs gained an early 1-0 lead with a run in the second as Brock Stassi led off the inning with a single, moved to third on a single and scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Angelys Nina.

In the top of the third, Nick Williams laced a one-out triple to center and scored on J.P. Arencibia's RBI single to give Lehigh Valley a 2-0 advantage.

A pair of runs in the sixth opened up a 4-0 lead for the IronPigs. In the inning, Ryan Jackson led off with a single, went to second on a sac bunt, took third on a single and stole home as part of a successfully executed double steal. Williams also plated a run via an RBI single.

Red Wings starter David Martinez (0-1) was dealt the loss as he surrendered three runs on seven hits while walking a pair in 6.1 IP.

Darnell Sweeney (3-4, 2B) had a multi-hit game for the Pigs.
