Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs will begin their three-game set with the Rochester Red Wings as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday night. First pitch of game one at Frontier Field is set for 5:05 p.m. Lehigh Valley enters play at 0-2 on the season after being swept by Syracuse in a doubleheader on Friday. Rochester sits at 2-1 on the year after taking two of three from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
RHP Zach Eflin will get the ball for the IronPigs in his Triple-A debut in game one. Eflin spent the entire 2015 season with Double-A Reading and was 8-6 with a 3.69 ERA in 23 GS. The right-hander is the youngest member of the IronPigs' 25-man roster. Eflin was acquired by the Phillies as part of the trade that sent Jimmy Rollins to the Dodgers in December of 2014.
RHP Mark Appel takes the hill for manager Dave Brundage's squad in game two on Tuesday. The right-hander will be making his debut in the Phillies organization after being acquired in December when Ken Giles was traded to Houston. Appel split the 2015 season between Double-A Corpus Christi (5-1, 4.26 in 13 GS) and Triple-A Fresno (5-2, 4.48 in 12 GS). The Stanford product was the No. 1 overall pick of the Astros in 2013.
LHP Logan Darnell gets the ball for Rochester in game one on Tuesday night. Darnell pitched for the Red Wings for all of 2015 and was 5-1 with a 2.78 ERA in 35 G (7 GS) for manager Mike Quade's squad. In those seven starts, the University of Kentucky product was 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA. Darnell has pitched in parts of three seasons in the International League and is 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA in 9 G (5 GS) in his career against the Pigs.
RHP David Martinez will be on the bump for the Red Wings in game two. The veteran right-hander spent most of 2015 with Frisco (AA) in the Rangers organization and was 3-5 to go along with a 2.84 ERA and 22 saves in 40 G. The 22 saves led the Texas League. Martinez also appeared in 9 G (2 GS) with Triple-A Round Rock and posted a 4.32 ERA.
In his Triple-A debut on Friday, Carlos Alonso notched a multi-hit game for Lehigh Valley.
