June 30, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Red Wings and Syracuse Chiefs split a Thursday night doubleheader at Frontier Field. Adam Brett Walker's walk-off grand slam gave the Wings a 5-1 win in the opener, and the Chiefs rebounded with a 6-1 win in the second game.
The teams meet again Friday night at 7:05 p.m., with fireworks after the game. Complete promotions details below....
Game One:
The Red Wings sent out LHP Andrew Albers who was opposed by RHP Reynaldo Lopez. This was Lopez's Triple-A debut. Albers worked a quick top of the first inning, allowing one baserunner in the form of a two out single.
James Beresford started the bottom half of the first with a liner down the right field line for a leadoff double. The Wings were unable to take advantage of the double however, and the game remained scoreless after an inning of play.
In the top of the second, Aquinas graduate Chris Bostick led off with a single into left field. This was followed up with a bunt single from Matt Den Dekker, and the Chiefs had runners on first and second with none out. Bostick eventually scored on a fielder's choice putout making the score 1-0 in favor of the Chiefs. That was all they would get though, as Albers was able to strike out the next batter he faced to end the frame.
The third inning saw the Chiefs put together another threat. Another two-out single from Brian Goodwin, who then stole second base, paired with a hit by pitch set Syracuse up with first and second with two men out. Albers worked out of the jam without allowing any runs thanks to a fine play from Wilfredo Tovar.
In the fourth Albers was able to work his first 1-2-3 inning of the night, thanks to a great running play from Jorge Polanco and another great play from Tovar.
Caleb Ramsey took over at first base for Matt Skole in the bottom of the fourth for the Chiefs. Earlier in the game Skole had fouled a pitch off his leg, and later in the same at-bat was hit by a pitch.
Kennys Vargas was able to work a four pitch walk in the fourth inning and Eddie Rosario grounded a sharp single into right field, giving the Red Wings another golden opportunity to tie the score. The rally was halted when Adam Brett Walker grounded into an inning ending double play.
Logan Schafer started things for the Wings in their half of the fifth by ripping a liner down the right field line for a leadoff triple. Tovar was able to drive him in with a sacrifice fly to right field. Schafer was just barely able to beat the throw, sliding in to tie the score at one.
Lopez allowed just three hits in six innings of work, with one earned run and four walks. He struck out four, and threw 101 pitches- 55 for strikes. Bryan Harper pitched the seventh, setting down the side in order and sending the first game into extra innings.
J.T. Chargois came into the game to pitch the eighth inning, after Albers allowed five hits and an earned run over his seven innings. Albers did not walk a batter and struck out three, throwing 91 pitches - 61 for strikes.
After Chargois (2-0) struck out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the eighth inning, Beresford led off the bottom of the eighth with single. He moved to second base on a wild pitch, then the Chiefs elected to walk Miguel Sano to bring Vargas to the plate. Vargas drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Rosario lined what looked to be a game-winning hit, but Bostick dove to his right to snag the line drive for the second out. Walker, just 1-for-8 in bases loaded situations coming into the game, smashed a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right-center for a game-winning, walk-off grand slam. The homer was Walker's team-leading 15th of the season.
Game Two:
Nick Greenwood made his second start for the Wings, who was opposed by Paolo Espino for the Chiefs. Both Greenwood and Espino worked perfect opening frames.
In the top of the second inning local product Chris Bostick led off with a double for the Chiefs and scored one batter later on another double, this time from Matt den Dekker, making it 1-0 Chiefs. The Chiefs extended their lead to 2-0 with an RBI single from Caleb Ramsey. But the rally ended there thanks to a nice double play from Tommy Field.
In the bottom half of the frame Eddie Rosario laced a liner to the wall in right and made it into second for a stand-up double. But the Red Wings were unable to capitalize on the one-out double and the score stayed 2-0 Chiefs.
The Red Wings set themselves up to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single from Jorge Polanco followed by a double by Sano giving the Wings second and third with no one out. But the Wings were not able to push any runs across as Espino was able to strike out the next three batters he faced.
In the top of the fifth the Chiefs were able to extend their lead to 3-0. This was the result of an RBI triple from Caleb Ramsey that scored Jhonatan Solano as Adam Brett Walker made an attempt at a sliding catch but the ball rolled to the wall. The Wings were able to throw out Ramsey between third and home as he tried to make it an inside the park home run.
The Red Wings cut into the Syracuse lead to 3-1 thanks to an RBI triple from Field. Scoring on the play was Stephen Wickens after he reached base on his single into right field. The Wings were unable to push any other runs across in the inning, despite having men on first and third.
Greenwood gave up a leadoff single in the sixth inning, which was followed up by a sacrifice bunt from Steve Lombardozzi. This gave the Chiefs a man on second with one out in the inning, this also saw the end of the line for Greenwood. Ryan O'Rourke and David Martinez pitched in relief, and the Chiefs added three more runs to increase their lead to 6-1.
Greenwood allowed seven hits and four earned runs, with no walks and four strikeouts. He threw 67 pitches, 48 for strikes.
Espino allowed seven hits over seven innings, with a walk and seven strikeouts.
Rosario and Wickens each had two hits for the Wings.
