Syracuse Mets News Release
Rochester, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs split a doubleheader with the Rochester Red Wings Thursday night at Frontier Field. Caleb Ramsey drove in four runs and Paolo Espino threw a complete game as the Chiefs took game two 6-1. Adam Brett Walker hit a walk-off grand slam in the eighth inning of game one for a 5-1 Rochester win. Reynaldo Lopez threw six innings in his Triple-A debut in game one for the Chiefs.
Syracuse (37-43) started the scoring in game one in the second. Rochester native Christopher Bostick singled to lead off the inning against Andrew Albers, followed by a Matt den Dekker bunt single. After a groundout moved the runners up, Zach Collier hit a ground ball to short. Wilfredo Tovar threw to third to get den Dekker, allowing Bostick to score and Collier to reach on a fielder's choice for a 1-0 Chiefs lead.
Rochester (47-35) finally got on the board in the fifth. Logan Schafer led off the inning with a triple. Tovar followed with a line out to right field. Schafer tagged and scored ahead of Collier's throw to tie the score.
The game stayed tied though the seven scheduled regulation innings. Lopez was impressive in his Triple-A debut, allowing just the lone run on three hits in six innings, with four walks and four strikeouts. Albers was excellent for Rochester, allowing five hits and a run, with no walks and three strikeouts.
The Red Wings ended game one in the eighth. James Beresford singled to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a flyout, a wild pitch by Bryan Harper allowed Beresford to move to second. Harper intentionally walked Miguel Sano to set up the force, but then walked Kennys Vargas to load the bases. The game nearly ended on the next batter when Rosario hit a line drive up the middle, but Bostick made an incredible diving catch at second to extend the game. But Walker took advantage and followed with a walk-off grand slam, estimated at 414 feet over the centerfield wall for a 5-1 Red Wings win.
The Chiefs again took the lead first in game two. Bostick doubled to start the second inning against Nick Greenwood. Den Dekker immediately followed with a double of his own, scoring Bostick for a 1-0 Syracuse lead. After a groundout moved den Dekker to third, Caleb Ramsey drove in the run with a single to put the Chiefs up two.
Ramsey gave the Chiefs a three run lead in the fifth. After Solano singled, Ramsey hit a line drive that got by Walker in left for an RBI triple for a 3-0 Chiefs lead.
The Red Wings finally got on the board in the fifth. Stephen Wickens singled with one out off Paolo Espino and scored with two outs on Tommy Field's triple to close the deficit to 3-1.
Syracuse answered right back and broke the game open in the sixth. Turner singled and was sacrificed to second. Rochester then turned to Ryan O'Rourke, who stuck out the first batter he faced. O'Rourke then intentionally walked Bostick to get to den Dekker. But den Dekker came through with a single to score Turner for a 4-1 Chiefs lead. David Martinez then came out of the bullpen and walked Solano, ahead of Ramsey's two-run double for a 6-1 Chiefs lead.
The Chiefs and Red Wings will finish the Rochester portion of the home-and-home series Friday night at 7:05 p.m. A.J. Cole is scheduled to start for the Chiefs opposite Jason Wheeler for the Red Wings.
