Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (17-27) had a win taken from their grasp in a 6-4 loss to the Lincoln Saltdogs (30-14) at the Birdcage on Tuesday night. Chad Hermansen tied the Canaries record for runs scored on the Birds way to a 3-2 ninth inning lead, but pinch hitter Bryan Warner tied the game and forced extra innings, where the Saltdogs would prevail in 11.
The Saltdogs took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Pichi Balet doubled and advanced to third base on a single by Josh Patton. With runners on the corners, Luis Lopez grounded into a double play, which allowed Balet to score for the early 1-0 lead.
The Canaries wasted no time going back in front. In the bottom of the fourth, Chad Hermansen singled to put a runner on for Abner Arroyo. Arroyo doubled to right-centerfield to bring around Hermansen. Arroyo took third base on the throw home. The relay throw from second baseman Josh Patton sailed into the Saltdogs dugout and Arroyo was awarded home on the error to give the Canaries a 2-1 lead. The run by Hermansen was his 76th of the season, tying Felix Pagan's 2001 mark for the most runs scored in Canaries season.
In the sixth inning, Saltdogs second baseman Josh Patton hit his 11th homer of the season to tie the game, 2-2.
The Canaries went back ahead in the seventh inning. Chris Hall led off with a single and advanced to second base on a throwing error by shortstop Casey Gordon. Angelo Fermin bunted Hall over to third base, and Kenta Suzumegano brought Hall in to score with a single. The run gave the Canaries a 3-2 lead.
The Saltdogs tied the game in the ninth. With runners on first and second, pinch hitter Bryan Warner singled to score Paul Powell and tie the game, 3-3.
Lincoln pulled ahead in the eleventh. Kevin Sullivan got on via an error by Canaries right fielder John Schmitz. Paul Powell laid down a bunt single to put runners on first and second base. Brett Cooley followed with a single, scoring Sullivan, and giving the Saltdogs a 4-3 lead. Bryan Warner delivered another key hit to drive home Powell and Cooley to put the Saltdogs ahead 6-3.
The insurance runs driven in by Warner would prove needed when Abner Arroyo hit his 13th homer of the season. The solo shot would be the Canaries only hit in extra innings in the 6-4 loss to Lincoln.
Kyle Ruwe (10-6) got the win in relief. Lenny Bays (2-4) suffered the loss. The teams will play the rubber match on Wednesday night in the Canaries final home game of the 2006 season. It will be "Fan Appreciation Night & Fireworks" presented by A&B Business Equipment and Toshiba America Business Solutions.
