St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - Brian Sprout and Billy Cox hit three-RBI home runs in a nine-run seventh inning to propel the St. Paul Saints to a 12-6 win over St. Joe before a sellout crowd of 6,461 at Midway Stadium. The Saints, 52-41 overall, knocked their magic number down to one over the Blacksnakes for the Wild Card spot in the American Association's North Division playoffs.
St. Paul needs just one win in their season-ending series with Sioux Falls or one St. Joe loss in their four-game set with Fort Worth to earn the right to face Lincoln in the North Division playoffs that open Monday night in Nebraska.
The Blacksnakes took advantage of a Jeremy Frost to score three unearned runs in the fourth inning and grab a 4-0 lead. The Saints chipped away to within 4-3 when they exploded for their biggest inning since May 27, 2004 when they scored nine against Winnipeg. Losing pitcher Shingo Mitsumori (3-5) retired the first batter of the inning, But the next seven batters reached base and scored off Mitsumori and two successors. Adam Olow's bases loaded walk tied the game and Derrick White's two-RBI single gave St. Paul a 6-4 lead. Sprout followed with his 10th homer of the year and Cox added his second to put the game out of reach.
Anthony Boughner (9-7) went seven innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits to get the win.
The Saints, who reached the postseason in each of manager George Tsamis' first three seasons at the helm when they were in the Northern League, are off Wednesday. They start a three-game series against the Canaries Thursday night at Midway at 7:05 p.m. St. Joe returns home to host the Cats Wednesday.
