Pensacola Pelicans News Release
It was a battle of number one starters in Pensacola as Sam Smith took to the mound for the Pelicans and Billy Keppinger got the call for the Explorers. Smith looked in mid-season form as he went eight innings and gave up two runs on eight hits and struck out seven batters to get the win in his last start of the 2006 season. The Pelicans scored five runs on 10 hits to win 5-2 and the series two games to one. In the game, Tim Dorn's two doubles broke the Pelicans single season doubles record, now set at 23.
The Pelicans got on the board first, scoring in the top of the third. Trino Aguilar, who entered the game hitting .404 in his last 10 games, led the inning off with a single and came around to score on a double by Tim Dorn.
Sioux City tied the game in the top of the fifth when Jake Daubert hit a solo homerun.
The Pelicans would reclaim the lead in the sixth, scoring two runs as Juan Rocha and Tim Dorn would come around to score. Dorn laced a double into leftfield for his 23rd two-bagger of the season, breaking the Pelican record of 22 set by Larry Bethea in 2004.
Pensacola tacked on two more in the seventh when Aguilar reached on a single and scored on a homerun by Juan Rocha, his team leading 13th shot of the season.
Sioux City threatened with a big inning in the 8th as they loaded the bases but were able to score only one run. JJ Burress led off the inning with a doublre and later scored off a Jake Daubert ground ball, making the score 5-2.
Tony Pierce came on to close the game in the 9th after the outstanding performance from Pelicans starting pitcher Smith. He struck out two of the three batters to secure the win, earning his 21st save of the season.
