Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, NC (JUNE 10, 2010) - Winston-Salem returned to BB&T Ballpark with a thud on Thursday night, losing 13-2 to the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The Dash allowed a season-high 19 hits and tied season-highs with 13 runs allowed and four errors committed as the team suffered its worst loss of the season.
Winston (38-23) has lost four in a row for the first time all year, but still leads Salem by three games in the Southern Division. The Red Sox dropped a 4-3 decision to the Frederick Keys to snip the Dash's magic number to seven games.
Wilmington (29-32) got a run in the first against Nevin Griffith, who had his worst outing of the season.
The Dash took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Alex Caldera (6-3) allowed the first four batters to reach base. Jon Gilmore and Seth Loman each had RBI singles to put Winston on top.
Griffith (4-2) lost control of the ballgame in the second. After retiring the leadoff batter, Rey Navarro singled to center and moved to second on a wild pitch. Fernando Garcia attempted to bunt Navarro to third, but Griffith's throw to first sailed over Loman's head, allowing Navarro to score and putting Garcia at second. After a walk to Patrick Norris, Adrian Ortiz doubled home Garcia to give Wilmington a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Eric Hosmer hit a two-run triple to cap a four-run second and put the Blue Rocks up 5-2.
Griffith allowed the first two batters in the third to reach base and was removed from the ballgame. One man came home on a sac fly off Charlis Burdie to make it 6-2 Wilmington.
Burdie and Dan Remenowsky kept it a four-run deficit with five shutout innings between the two.
The Blue Rocks offense jumped back into gear in the eighth inning against Kyle Bellamy, with generous assistance from the Winston-Salem defense. The Dash committed three errors in the inning, leading to four unearned Wilmington runs. Hector Santiago gave up three runs in the ninth inning, all coming with two outs.
Wilmington's 19 hits were the most Winston's pitching has allowed all season. The Blue Rocks' 13 runs tied the highest offensive output by a Dash opponent, equaling Salem's total on May 8.
Griffith suffered his second loss, allowing six runs (three earned) in two-plus innings. Caldera picked up his sixth win after giving up two runs (one earned) in five innings.
Winston hopes to snap its four-game losing streak on Friday when RHP Stephen Sauer (4-2, 4.08) opposes LHP John Lamb (2-1, 1.50) in a 7 p.m. start. The audio webcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
