Three Blue Rocks Named All-Stars

June 10, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - The Carolina League announced its mid-season All-Star team on Thursday afternoon, and three Wilmington Blue Rocks were named to the squad. First baseman Eric Hosmer, catcher Salvador Perez and pitcher Alex Caldera each received the honor.

Hosmer was named the team's starting first baseman. He has led the CL in batting average virtually throughout 2010, entering Thursday night's game with a league-best .357 clip. He is also tied for the league lead in doubles (21) and ranks second in on-base percentage (.425).

Perez is the squad's utility catcher. The 20-year-old, who began the season as the youngest player in the Carolina League, is a top-30 prospect in the Kansas City system and the "Best Defensive Catcher" on the Royals' farm according to Baseball America. He has not disappointed defensively, leading the loop in number of men caught stealing. What has been a pleasant surprise, has been Perez's consistently potent offensive numbers. The catcher is batting .294, good for second on the team, with 22 RBIs and 11 doubles.

Caldera, who struggled in 2009 despite being the Blue Rocks' Opening Day starter that year, has had a huge bounce-back 2010 season. In 11 outings (10 starts), Caldera has posted a 5-3 mark with a scant 2.92 earned run average. That ERA is good for fifth in the league, as are his 64.2 innings pitched. Caldera is also tied for fourth in the loop with 64 strikeouts.

He will make his next start on Thursday as the Rocks visit the Winston-Salem Dash at 7 p.m. The contest serves as the opener of an eight-day, seven-game road trip for the Blue Crew.

The Dash leads the league with seven players on the CL All-Star team, which will take on the California League All-Stars on Tuesday, June 22 in Myrtle Beach, SC. The host Pelicans had three pitchers named to the team. The host Pelicans' coaching staff will also mentor the squad. Salem, which has the second-best record in the loop, has the second-most All-Stars with five. The Carolina League North-leading Frederick Keys had just two All-Stars while Lynchburg, Potomac and Kinston tied for the fewest representatives at one apiece.
