Salem Red Sox News Release

Frederick, MD (June 10, 2010) - A three-run run fourth inning, headlined by a controversial call and a successful suicide squeeze, proved to be the difference in Frederick's 4-3 victory over Salem on Thursday evening at Harry Grove Stadium. Though the Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, a Jacob Julius solo homer made it 2-1 after two, and the Keys big third inning sufficed as Salem plated just one the rest of the way to fall in the series opener. Since Winston-Salem lost 13-2 to Wilmington, the Red Sox remained just three games behind the Dash with nine remaining in the first half.

With one out and the bases empty in the fourth, Julius popped a routine fly to left-fielder Jorge Padron. Padron appeared to make the catch for the second out and then drop the ball on the transfer from glove to hand, but the home plate umpire Matt Cumbee ruled that Padron never had full possession and the play was ruled an error as Julius winded up at second base. Up next, Billy Rowell singled to put runners at the corners, and Miguel Abreu crushed a two-run triple to right to transform a 2-1 deficit to a 3-2 advantage. On the ensuing pitch, Abreu broke to the plate from third and Phillip Britton dropped down a perfect bunt to bring home another run on the superbly executed squeeze, making it 4-2.

All four runs were notched against Stolmy Pimentel, though just three of them were earned due to the error. Pimentel tossed five innings and suffered the loss, falling to 4-4 on the season.

Salem plated two early runs (only one earned) off Frederick starter Nathan Nery, but the Keys lefthander struck out six over five and a third solid innings to pick up the victory, improving to 5-5 on the year.

The Red Sox cut the 4-2 deficit in half on Drew Hedman's solo homer to right-field off Brett Jacobson in the seventh inning. The blast was Hedman's first of his professional career. The 50th round draft pick from 2009 nearly tied the game in the ninth off closer Jose Diaz, as he launched another towering fly to deep right. The ball deflected off the wall and wound up as a two-out triple. With the tying run at third with two outs, Mitch Dening drew a walk, but Will Middlebrooks, who went 0-5 in the game, grounded softly to first to finish it. Diaz picked up his ninth save with an inning and a third of scoreless relief.

Oscar Tejeda went 3-4 for Salem, yet none of his hits came with runners in scoring position. The Sox went hitless (0-6) with runners in scoring position in the ballgame, leaving eight runners aboard on the night. Hedman finished 2-4 with two RBI, while Tim Federowicz went 2-4 with a run scored. Out of the bullpen, Kyle Fernandes struck out five in three scoreless, hitless innings, yet the Red Sox could not overcome the deficit.

Salem and Frederick continue their four-game series on Friday night, with Miguel Gonzalez opposing Oliver Drake in the pitching matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM from Harry Grove Stadium.
