Cats Drop Series Opener to Nats
June 10, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Cody Puckett had a double and triple, but didn't score as Lynchburg was shutout by Potomac, 3-0.
The Nationals got on the board in the first inning. Chris Curran led off the game with a double. After starter Mark Serrano retired the next two batters, he walked catcher Derek Norris. Bill Rhinehart then hit a two-run double with two outs. Rhinehart was tagged out trying to advance to third on the hit.
Serrano then calmed down, retiring 17 of his next 22 batters before leaving with an apparent injury in the seventh. However Potomac scored its third run on a Norris solo home run in the sixth.
The Hillcats starter Serrano ended his outing after six and two-thirds of an inning, giving up three earned runs and striking out eight. It was his sixth quality start of the season (11 total starts).
Puckett's two hits came in his first two at-bats. He doubled in the first and tripled in the third but was stranded at third base both times.
The loss goes to Serrano. He's now 2-4 on the season. Lance Janke and Bill Bray threw scoreless outings in relief. Bray struck out the side in the eighth.
Lynchburg and Potomac continue their series tomorrow night at City Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05, and the gates open at 6 p.m. The first 1,000 fans into the ballpark will receive a Hillcats Batting Practice Cap presented by The Army and The Planet. James Avery (1-1, 3.93 ERA) starts for Lynchburg opposite Adrian Alaniz (1-2, 3.67 ERA).
