Frederick Keys News Release

Frederick picked up their eighth win in their last nine games as they defeated Salem, 4-3, on Thursday night. The Keys plated one run in the second and three in the fourth on their way to the victory. LHP Nate Nery improved to 5-5 on the season as he allowed two runs, one earned, over 5 1/3 innings pitched. With the win Frederick improved to 37-24 and cut the magic number to clinch the Northern Division to two. Salem dropped to 35-26 in the loss.

After a scoreless first inning, Salem struck first on Thursday night. With the bases loaded in the second, RF Drew Hedman grounded into a fielder's choice which brought home DH Tim Federowicz for the first run of the evening. The next batter up for Salem, CF Mitch Dening, hit a fly ball to leftfield that was deep enough to score SS Ryan Dent from third. The Red Sox led 2-0 after an inning and a half in Frederick.

The Keys cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second. With one out, DH Jacob Julius belted the Stolmy Pimentel pitch over the centerfield fence for his sixth homerun of the year. Julius' sixth homerun ties a career-high that he obtained in Aberdeen in 2008. Last season with Delmarva, he had just two homeruns in 57 games with the Shorebirds.

The scored remained 2-1 Salem until the bottom of the fourth.

RF Ronnie Welty led off the inning with a pop out to SS Ryan Dent. With one down, Julius hit a fly ball to leftfield but LF Jorge Pardon could not make the catch. After a single by 3B Billy Rowell, 2B Miguel Abreu came to the plate. Abreu, who had not hit a triple since May 29, 2009 with Bowie, tripled to right-center to bring home Julius and Rowell. C Phillip Britton and Abreu perfectly executed a squeeze on the next pitch by Pimentel to give Frederick a two-run lead after four innings.

Salem scored a run in the seventh on RF Drew Hedman's first homerun of the season.

Neither team scored in the eighth to set the stage for an exciting finish.

RHP Jose Diaz struck out SS Ryan Dent to start the ninth and then got 1B Jon Hee to fly out to right for the second out of the inning. Hedman, who homered in the seventh inning, hit a drive to deep rightfield. Ronnie Welty knocked the ball back into play but Hedman raced into third for his first triple of the season. CF Mitch Dening walked as All-Star 3B Will Middlebrooks came to the plate. Middlebrooks lightly tapped a ball down the first base line and 1B Joe Mahoney fielded the grounder and touched first for the final out of the game. Diaz's save was his ninth in nine attempts this season.

The Keys and Red Sox will hit the field again Friday night at 7 p.m. RHP Oliver Drake (1-2, 4.31) will start for Frederick while Salem will send RHP Miguel Gonzalez (0-0, 7.20) to the hill.

Ben Jones, known to the world as Cooter from Dukes of Hazzard and the General Lee will be at the ballpark on Friday night for the second annual Frednceck Night presented by Yellow Cab, and WFMD/WFRE. The first 250 fans through the gate will receive t-shirts to commemorate the event.

Fireworks will follow the game presented by the US Army. A special night will be made more so by an on-field ceremony in which future soldiers will be sworn in to the US Army pre-game.
