Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals tallied three runs in the first, but were stymied the rest of the way by Trevor Williams as the Jupiter Hammerheads took game two of the series 5-4 on Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The loss ends the Cardinals' four-game winning streak.
The Cardinals (14-17) struck quickly on Monday evening, turning four hits into three runs in the first inning. Charlie Tilson and Nick Martini each got on board with singles before David Washington opened the scoring with a broken-bat ground rule double to the right field corner. Breyvic Valera added an RBI groundout and Starlin Rodriguez slapped a single to right to bring in Washington and give Palm Beach a 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals wouldn't get another hit until the seventh inning.
After the three-run first, Williams settled in and finished with eight strong innings. Besides giving up a walk to Charlie Tilson in the fifth, Williams didn't allow a base runner between the second and sixth innings. He surrendered four runs - three earned - on six hits and one walk on the night. Williams (4-3) struck out four on his way to his fourth winning decision.
The Hammerheads (13-18) scored two unearned runs in the bottom half of the first to make it 3-2 and took control of the game with three more runs off Michael Mayers in the fifth.
With two outs in the fifth inning, the Sharks notched five straight singles to score three runs and take the lead 5-3.
Mayers (2-3) left in the fifth in favor of Aidan Lucas and was credited with 4.2 innings of work. Mayers allowed five runs - three earned - on 11 hits, walked one, and struck out three on the evening.
Palm Beach crept to within one in the seventh inning after Valera legged out a bunt single and moved to third on the subsequent throwing error. Rodriguez recorded his second RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly to right field to cut the Jupiter lead to 5-4.
The Birds wouldn't get any closer as Williams tossed a 1-2-3 eighth and O'Gara closed the door with his fifth save of the year.
Valera is batting .438 (14-for-32) with 10 runs and five RBI over his current seven-game hitting streak.
The Cardinals and Hammerheads will play the final game of the three-game series on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
