Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL (May 5, 2014) - Now the roles have been reversed. In the first five meetings between the Stone Crabs and Mets, both teams have featured both ends of the pitching spectrum. On Monday night, it was Gabriel Ynoa exacting a small measure of revenge less than a week removed from a Stone Crabs attack that resulted in an 11-2 win at Tradition Field. Ynoa ignored history, and went up against Alex Colome, who arrived at Charlotte Sports Park for a rehab assignment after receiving a 50-game suspension by Major League Baseball just prior to the regular season. Although the Mets were outhit once again, they coasted to a rather one-sided 5-2 victory, relying on their pitching to shut down the Stone Crabs offense for the second straight game.

Both starters hit the ground running in perfect first innings, with Colome touching 96 with his fastball and striking out both Dilson Herrera and Brandon Nimmo. His control soon eluded him in the second, and he walked Cam Maron after surrendering a leadoff double to right center off the bat of Jairo Perez. A pair of wild pitches brought in Perez for the game's first run. Two more strikeouts preceded a four pitch walk to Robbie Shields and an RBI single by ninth hitter Maikis De La Cruz for a 2-0 Mets lead.

With two outs in the home second, Kes Carter cranked his third triple of the year before Tyler Goeddel's RBI single cut the deficit in half at 2-1. With Colome approaching his pitch limit, Jared Sandberg called on Leonel Santiago for a night of long relief. His first inning in the third was his worst after a one out triple by Perez and an RBI groundout by Maron gave the Mets another two run advantage.

Josh Sale's leadoff triple down the right field line in the bottom of the inning got the crowd back in to it. Andrew Toles sacrifice fly to center made it 3-2 before Tommy Coyle's one out double put the tying run in scoring position for the heart of the order. Ynoa got Reginatto to pop out to second, but walked Maxx Tissenbaum before facing Patrick Leonard. Like Reginatto just moments earlier, the Stone Crabs cleanup hitter sent a soft tapper to second for the final out.

The tying run got even closer in the fifth inning following a one out single by Toles. He stole second base, and got to third on a throwing error by Mets catcher Cam Maron. Coyle walked on four pitches, but Reginatto and Leonard failed to move either runner with a pair of flyouts to left to send the game to the sixth. Santiago departed with two outs in the seventh after his second strong showing against the Mets. Parker Markel, one of Charlotte's most reliable and accurate relievers, let his control do him in during the eighth inning.

With the Mets still ahead 3-2, Markel hit Perez with an 0-2 pitch to begin the frame. A walk to Maron and an RBI single by Aderlin Rodriguez doubled the lead to 4-2. With Maron at third, Markel threw a ball in the dirt that catcher Justin O'Conner picked up and fired down to second with Rodriguez on the move. Coyle tagged him for the first out, but his throw to the plate to get Maron wasn't in time, and the Mets had more than enough leverage to close out the 5-2 victory with two perfect innings by reliever Beck Wheeler in the eighth and ninth
