Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL-After Trevor Williams allowed three runs on four hits in the first inning, it looked like the right-hander didn't have his best stuff on Monday night. But Williams settled down and ended up going eight innings as Hammerheads came away with a 5-4 victory over Palm Beach at Roger Dean Stadium.
The Cards jumped on Williams in the first inning when Charlie Tilson and Nick Martini reached on singles before David Washington drove home Tilson with a ground rule double. Marini would later score when Breyvic Valera grounded out and Washington would be driven in when Starlin Rodriguez hit a single to right center.
Williams would then retire the next 12 batters he faced. He would allow just one unearned the rest of the way when Valera reached on a bunt single in the seventh, moved to third when Colin Moran's throw was wild, and scored when Rodriguez hit a sac fly to right.
Williams would end up pitching a 1-2-3 eighth in his last inning of work as he earned his fourth win of the year in the longest start of his career. He tossed just 91 pitches, 66 of which were strikes, and walked one with four strikeouts.
The Hammerheads would immediately start chipping away from the early deficit in the bottom of the first inning. With one out Terrence Dayleg and Colin Moran reached with back-to-back singles and after a pop up they moved into scoring position when Michael Mayers threw a wild pitch.
Matt Juengel would then hit a grounder to short but when the throw by Alex Mejia drew Washington off the bag at first, Dayleg scored. Moran would come home when Mayers' pickoff attempt of Juengel went wild for an error.
The Sharks would take the lead in the fifth inning doing all of their damage with two outs. Juengel started the rally with a single up the box before he stole second. Blake Barber would tie the game with a single to right-center.
With Barber on the move Cameron Flynn then pulled a single into right to put runners on the corners. Anthony Gomez would put Jupiter ahead when he used and inside out swing to find the hole between first and second for a RBI single, his third hit of the night.
Flynn would score in the next at bat when Ryan Goetz reached on an infield single.
The Hammerheads would finish the evening with 13 hits led by the performance by Gomez who went 3-for-4. Dayleg, Viosergy Rosa and Juengel had two hits apiece in the win.
Joseph O'Gara pitched the ninth for Jupiter and he worked around a one-out single to pick up his fifth save of the year.
With the win the Hammerheads improved to 4-1 against the Cardinals in the Fins vs. Feathers series this year. The two teams will play the rubber match of the three-game series on Tuesday night. Jupiter will be the home team in that game. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
